This is a sub-page of Proto:Counter-Strike: Source.
Valve's official public beta for the game, compiled three months before release. Initially, this was given out to members of Valve's Cyber Cafe program, and on August 18, 2004, it was later released for people who owned Counter-Strike: Condition Zero or received a Half-Life 2 voucher that was packaged with certain graphics cards from that time.
General Differences#
Title Screen#
This beta's title screen has the word "BETA" written on top of it and lacks the Friends menu, as well as the Video Stress Test button. Otherwise, it is identical to the final title screen.

Maps#
Only one map is playable in this beta: de_dust. It is virtually the same as in the final game, outside of having slightly more fog.
Graphic Differences#
Buy Menu icons#
In a similar fashion to the leaked 2003 build of Counter-Strike: Source, this build also re-uses the Counter-Strike 1.6 buy icons.

Environment Maps#
The "materials/environment maps" folder contains two unused environment maps in 32x32 resolution, intended for the map "cs_office".
Sprays#
The pre-made spray selection in this beta build includes two sprays that were cut from the final game. Also worth noting is that the "Elited", "Flashbanged", "In sights" and "No Bombs" sprays are absent.
Weapon Differences#
While the weapons in this build are mostly similar to the final game's arsenal, there's still some differences to be found:
- The bug that allows players to quickly attach/detach the USP and M4A1's suppressors via "quick-switching" from CS 1.6 was yet to be fixed for Source.
- The .228 Compact (P228) uses a different texture and its reloading animation doesn't have the player inserting a magazine onto the gun.

- The Dual Elites (Dual Berettas) use a different texture. This texture is in double the final texture's resolution (1024x1024 compared to 512x512), the slide has a matte finish and less serrations, and there's less detail in certain other areas.

- The M3 shotgun (Leone 12 Gauge Super) uses a different texture.

- The AWP and Scout's reloading animations don't have the player use the gun's bolt, much like in CS 1.6.
- The SG550 (Krieg 550) uses a different texture and even a different firing sound. The texture is much less detailed in general, the text on the receiver isn't mirrored and there is no baked-in shadow on the magazine.

Tactical Shield#
The Tactical Shield is present in this beta build, complete with a model. It's possible to spawn this item in-game via the command give item_shield and is able to be picked up, however, picking up the shield only makes the "armor bought" sound effect, as there is no code or viewmodels for shielded weapons.
