Present on PlayStation Magazine Demo Disc 106 is a 1-level demo of Cars based off of an earlier version, dated March 20, 2006. Despite being a completely stripped down version of the game that only contains relevant assets, the demo features a few differences between itself and the final.

Differences#

  • There is no title screen. After showing the company logos, the game immediately starts the event "Radiator Springs Grand Prix".
  • Everything but the first story event has been removed, along with many files related to said events (level maps, characters, sound effects, voice clips, scripts, FMVs, etc).
  • The demo removed all but 2 music tracks ("One More Chicken" and "Stone Crows" by Bruno Coon).
  • In the mission "Radiator Springs Grand Prix", Fletcher and Sally have been replaced with Mater and Flo. Neither Fletcher's or Sally's files remain in the demo.
  • The characters seem to drive at faster speeds than the final game.
  • There appear to be no shadows underneath the characters.
  • McQueen will often perform his landing animation at random intervals.
  • McQueen seems to be missing/not using his turning animations from the final game.
  • After finishing the event, the game briefly shows a "Coming soon" screen and returns to the Demo Disc's menu afterwards.

  • The Rainbow Studios logo FMV is different from the final game.

Finally, during this time in development, the "Floating like a Cadillac, Stinging like a Beamer!" victory animation was still being used when finishing a race. In the final, the animation itself was (albeit accidentally, and with the wrong audio) used when finishing a Tractor Tipping level, but the audio remains unused. The same animation would later be used for multiple lines in the third game Cars-Race O-Rama. The Monster Truck McQueen variant of the victory animation went unused entirely in the final game.

Unused Loading Screens#

There are a few loading screens in the files that are not used in the demo for different reasons.

Unused Boot Screen#

load_boot_demo is a loading screen that was meant to show up to advertise the release period of the final game, though the demo does not use it during its boot or shut-off sequences, thus rendering it unused.

Radiator Springs Grand Prix Loading Screen Placeholder#

This is an early placeholder version of the loading screen for "Radiator Springs Grand Prix" from chapter 1. This temporary loading screen is styled the same way as other early loading screens found in the files of the final game

Unused Icons#

Radiator Springs Grand Prix Preview Placeholder#

An early placeholder version of the preview icon used in the Arcade mode to represent the chapter 1 Radiator Springs Grand Prix race. Just like the placeholder loading screen for the same mission, the preview placeholder is styled the same way as other preview placeholders found in the files of the final game

Early Doc Icon#

icon_DOC_a is an unused icon of a very early, unfinished model of Doc Hudson. It features a brighter shade of blue. He also sports an early design for his wheels that look like a fusion of his casual -and racing tires, featuring black wall tires instead of white walls and red rims with white hubcaps.

Unused Audio#

Music#

While all but 2 music tracks were removed, the file that defines each piece of music and its usage (music.pb) still contain the names of every artist.

The demo listing contains the artists Eddie Rabbit and The Black Crows, whose songs ("Drivin' My Life Away" and "Go Faster", respectively) are still left over in the files of the final game, but go unused. Surprisingly, it also lists two other artists, The Donnas and Junior Brown, as originally having their music featured in the game; it's unknown which of their songs were planned to be implemented.

Dialogue#

To do:
These are also found in the Wii version. Add these and more unused voice clips to the Wii/Xbox 360 page

Lightning McQueen#

This demo only contains voice clips for the racers that appear. However, Lightning McQueen has 8 unused voice clips of him burping and having hiccups not found in the files of the final game. It is currently unknown what these voice clips were intended to be used for. They might have been intended for the scrapped "Flo's Fuel Up Countdown" mission.
