PaRappa's Part-Time Job#

Pages 116 and 117 of the Um Jammer Lammy Official Backside Guide Book (ウンジャマラミー 公式裏ガイドブック) contains comments from screenwriter Gabin Ito about a scrapped concept for PaRappa's first stage. At this point in development, Lammy and PaRappa's stories were intertwined: the former was in a hurry to get to her concert, while the latter works through many part-time jobs in order to earn money to go to the same concert. The story goes as follows:
- Just before the fire scene in the intro to Lammy's Stage 2, PaRappa and PJ get hungry and go to a donut shop. After eating, they realize they're out of money.
- Suddenly, a fire truck passes by, going towards a fire nearby. The two take advantage of the confusion and run away without paying, but then they have no money left.
- After thinking to themselves how they should make money, PaRappa has an idea. "Yeah, I know, I gotta believe!!!" With these words, gameplay begins.
- Behind Lammy, who is using a fire hose as a guitar and doing her best, PaRappa and PJ set up a stand where they sell shirts. They have inscriptions like "Light my fire!", which take full advantage of the situation.
Ultimately, this concept was dropped due to storage issues with the cutscene movies, though not before a prototype was created, as shown in the screenshot on the right, which itself has many differences compared to the final version:
- One of Lammy's early designs can be seen in the top left, as well as the scrolling icon in the notes bar.
- The lyric box originally had square edges.
- There is what appears to be a debug display above the lyric box.
- The meter uses the same font from the original PaRappa The Rapper, including the centered text, though it lacks the "U rappin' !" seen in that game.
1998 Trailer#
Watch on YouTubeA trailer showing many differences in both cutscenes and gameplay.
General#
- Stage animations are mostly unfinished, with characters' faces lacking movement and Lammy not moving as much when playing.
- It appears that the transition between two ranks originally flashed yellow instead of white.
- The Lammy face on the interface is different.

August 1999 Trailer#
|
|
To do: |
Watch on YouTubeShown during the August 26, 1999 promotional concert. It's mostly similar to the 1998 trailer with a few differences, despite being shown after the game's Japanese and North American releases.
- 1:00 Teriyaki Yoko jumps higher when the player loses.
- 1:02 Though only seen for a few frames, it can be seen that the subtitles "Uh huh, that's why we have to get going right now." can be seen, despite the fact that it's said earlier in the cutscene than shown. Similar instances of this can be seen at 1:07 and 1:09.
- 1:30 For some reason, Lammy's mouth is missing, and her pupils disappear for a frame. Formatting for exclamation points in the subtitles is also different.
- 1:35 Lammy skids to a stop on the sidewalk instead of in the road, and there's no car behind her as a result.
PlayStation Underground Interview#
Watch on YouTubePresent on disc one of PlayStation Underground Volume 3.3 is an interview with the development team, using footage that has a few differences compared to the final game.
- 1:16 On one of the developer's computer monitors, the title screen with the logo from the demo featured in the PlayStation Underground Jampack: Winter '99 can be seen.
- 1:51 The player somehow gains 200 points while only using one input.
- 2:46 An early version of the Stage 2 cutscene can be seen. The movement is slightly more fluid (likely due to being the raw video file rather than the compressed version used in the final game), Lammy's expression is slightly different before she skids to a stop, and the camera angle is slightly different when she does, as well as the position of some cars being different.
