Super Mario Maker

This article has a talk page!
view on tcrf.net

This page details pre-release information and/or media for Super Mario Maker.

This page is rather stubbly and could use some expansion.
Are you a bad enough dude to rescue this article?
Notes: Talk about the changes seen in during the 2014 Treehouse stream, the Game Awards trailer, and any other trailers seen before release.

Development Timeline#

  • 2014
    • June 5th - An E3 2014 booth for Mario Maker (as it was known then) was leaked.
    • June 10th - The game was officially announced via a trailer during the Nintendo E3 Digital Event. The E3 show floor had a playable demo (on some of the days of E3 at least) and screenshots, artwork and a press release were released to the press.

Weird Mario#

E3 2014

Final

Originally, Weird Mario's sprite was just Small Mario's sprite stretched taller. In the final version, Weird Mario has a brand-new sprite, with Small Mario's head on a tall, lanky body.

E3 2014#

To do:
Split this into E3 2014 demo, trailer and screenshots. And more Game Awards to separate section.

Placeholder Level Icon#

This placeholder level icon appears for a moment during a gameplay video that was recorded at Nintendo headquarters. The proper level icon appeared after scrolling to the bottom of the level list and then back up.

Super Mario Bros. Style#

The Super Mario Bros. style looked very different in the E3 2014 build. Several elements such as ground and question blocks got a shiny appearance, and background shadows were darker. Coins produced sparkles when collected in this style. The background was more saturated and had a slightly shiny grid effect. Contrast all this with the final game which, aside from drop shadows, is mostly faithful to Super Mario Bros's flat look.

The timer had the word "TIME" instead of the timer icon. In this demo it was set to 999, whereas the final version has a hard max. cap of 500. This timer kept counting down even while editing the level. Once the timer went under 60 seconds, a message would display saying that only one minute of demo time was left, and the music would speed up, even in the editor. Once the timer hit zero, the demo would end and the player would be asked if the level they made could be saved for review by the developers.

Course Maker#

Super Mario Maker went through many changes before its release.

E3 2014

Final

The Course Maker from the E3 2014 build had many differences from the final. There are some major ones, like there being an extra block for power ups, and Coursebot's absence. The trash can was later replaced with the Reset Rocket, and Undo Dog resembles his sprite from Mario Paint. There was originally a button to select the hand and the eraser instead of just the eraser. The eraser's sprite was also meant to replicate the Mario Paint one.

This build only had 14 items total, with no rows. The ground course element was a block you extended instead of placing down the block itself. Extending blocks looked different, and the narrator singing the course element you placed sounded more unintelligible and subtle. The Trampoline used the design from Super Mario Bros. (albeit redrawn to fit in a 16x16 tile), rather than the completely redesigned sprite used in the final.

Game Awards

Final

The Game Awards trailer looks closer to the final game, but not completely. The starting arrow is first seen here, with a shadow, unlike the final. Mario's starting point is one block back. The Hand, Eraser, Undo Dog, Trash Can, and Play button have all been changed to look more modern. The Item box at the top had an "X" next to the items rather than a number, and the arrow button is smaller.

Clearing a Stage#

When clearing a stage in the E3 2014 build, you see the words, "CONGRATULATIONS!" covering the screen followed by someone shouting the word with streamers, confetti, falling Super Stars, and the clapping hands from Mario Paint. In the Super Mario Bros. game style, the hands look pixelated, while in the New Super Mario Bros. U game style, the hands have a more high-resolution look to them. The final game only uses the smoother clapping hands when you clear a row of courses as a world in Coursebot, and the original hands aren't used at all.

Art Book#

To do:

  • See if there is a higher quality official PDF (I recall there might have been a version that was sent to the press?)
  • See if the physical art book is higher quality than the common official PDF
  • Add page numbers

Early SMB Donut Block#

Art Book

Early

Final

Early SMB Donut Block.png

The image of the Nintendo logo made using Super Mario Bros tiles in the art book contains an early version of the SMB Donut Block. It is also located as an unused asset in the game's files, from a leftover of the Game Awards build of the game.

Early SMB Magikoopa#

Art Book

Final

The Super Mario Maker art book contains an early design for the Super Mario Bros Magikoopa where it was originally taller than it is in the final game.

The Magikoopa's appearance when you are Big Mario is actually based on this early design.

Early SMB Monty Mole#

Art Book

Final

The art book also contains an early version of the Monty Mole's SMB design, using slightly different colors as well as having a different sprite for jumping out of the ground that lacks black pixels on its hands.

Early SMW Galoomba#

Please elaborate.
Having more detail is always a good thing.
Specifically: Not clear what this means: "Some further proof is the New Super Mario Bros. U gamestyle on there is composed of promotional art."

Art Book

Final

Page 44 contains the Galoomba's original design with yellow shoes. While it isn't confirmed it used this design in-game, it showed up where all 4 gamestyles appeared with art of each of them. Some further proof is the New Super Mario Bros. U gamestyle on there is composed of promotional art.

Early NSMBU Door#

Art Book

Final

Page 16 uses a screenshot that contains an early version of the NSMBU warp door that is fully rectangle shaped instead of being curved at the top.

Early NSMBU Arrow Signpost#

Art Book

Final

The same screenshot also contains an early version of the Arrow Signpost seen at the beginning of a level with a much smaller arrow, resembling the arrow signboard design used in the original New Super Mario Bros. U game.
