Segapede started life as a Sonic the Hedgehog spinoff title. Craig Stitt writes:

The original concept pitch had the game taking place in the Sonic Universe. Zipp was one of Robotnik's badniks that had become friends with Sonic. There was a whole story of Sonic teaming up with Zipp to save Robotink from a disastrous lab accident. While SEGA liked the game, sadly they wanted it as a stand-alone game.

Concept Art#

Artwork of a proposed second character. According to Craig:

There was going to be a second player character named Sputnik. His abdomen could be swapped out with one of the little power-ups that trail behind Zipp

Proposed segments for Zipp. The available prototype has the Defensive Spikes, Turbo Charger, Tail Cap, and Spacer Segment all implemented, along with unused graphics for what appears to be the Vertical Firing Rockets.

Concept Demo#

What appears to be just a simple animation test of Zipp, using his design from the prototype. According to Craig it was just a static screen test of new artwork for the game, done several months after the available prototype and close to the time Sega put the game "on hold". Hidden Palace's art was used as a basis for this new artwork.

World Test#

According to Craig, this was a test of the first original level artwork done for the game after the available prototype. It is said to use the same game engine, but has no actual gameplay and is just an art test. Zipp looks different here and more closer to the original 3D model of him in terms of design; he also always holds a gun here, unlike the prototype.

Craig Stitt Video Resumé (1995)#

Watch on YouTubeA video Craig put together to serve as a visual resumé when he was getting ready to leave Sega, showing off the work he did for every STI and Genesis project he worked on, with the majority of the video (from 5:15 onward) devoted to Segapede.

While no gameplay is shown off here, this video does show off various concept art for the game and the original 3D Studio models that would be used as a basis for making the sprite work.

  • The introductory slide at 5:15 lists the game as "Astropede (Segapede)" and that it is "CURRENTLY ON HOLD". Craig has stated that Sega put the game "on hold" before its cancellation.
  • At 9:22, various sketches of Zipp are shown off, including a reference sheet.
  • At 10:15, a couple sketches of Zipp's partner Sputnik are shown.
  • At 10:42, a piece of concept art is shown.
  • At 11:30, the 3D models for the game are shown off, showing Zipp's gun and an animation of Zipp himself. It also includes a detailed look at Zipp's model at the end.
