This page details pre-release information and/or media for Running Fred.

UI Concept#

This version was (most likely) created as a concept to demonstrate what the game's menu and its components would look like.

  • The main menu depicted Fred running through some area. There’s 4 buttons as before but some of them have different icons:
  • Adventure Mode icon is basically the same as before
  • Survival Mode has an icon with a shoe sole instead of the red skull
  • Store icon is an opened cardboard box that has Fred silhouette in it
  • The timer icon can be assumed to be an early Challenge Mode one
  • The shop (called Store) only had 4 avatars: Classic, Mario, Naughty, and Sir.
  • Also, Naughty Fred has exposed nipples.
  • The level selection menu looked pretty primitive.
  • The location selections were called chapters, and the selection icons resembled photographs.

September 2011 build#

Watch on YouTubeThis build was shown in the video Running Fred - Unusual Deaths.

  • Fred's falling animation is different.
  • The ramp looks different and doesn't have the arrows in the middle to indicate the landing.
  • The textures in High Stakes (then called The Rooftops) are largely borrowed from Grisly Manor (then called The Castle)
  • The textures of the traps were gray, and the circular saw had a completely different texture (by the way, you can see it on the icon of the 3rd level of the Manor)
  • There seems to be a freezer in Grisly Manor level 5 instead of level 7
  • The piercing death animation is
  • A bone crack sound is played when crushed by the boulders, instead of using the generic pain sound effect.
  • There is a crusher trap at the start of a Grisly Manor level, when the crushers on
  • At the end, the color of the location from the menu is much darker, and Fred, instead of wearing the Classic T-shirt, runs away in the Life Down T-shirt.

Pre-Alpha build#

Watch on YouTubeA pre-alpha was shown at the EVA 2011 Argentina games expo to demonstrate what the game would look like.

  • The textures of the 6th level in Manor resemble the usual ones.
  • The number of lives near Fred's HUD is missing.
  • At the top there is a bar with Fred and Grimmy, which is approaching him, to show how close it is to you.
  • The textures of Rooftops are now more reminiscent of the 4th and 5th levels of Manor.
  • The appearance and textures of the bouncer are different.
  • The ramp still has the same model, which was mentioned in the last build.
  • The mechanics of the jetpack, which needs to be filled with gasoline, are shown.
  • At the end, they show 4 shots of Fred from different locations, two of which are unknown. In the first, he is running along some corridor, and in the fourth, on the battlefield, in the trenches.

December 2011 build#

RF_Dec_2011_Build-1.png

The build was featured in a video about new games from the Chrome Web Store, and was almost identical to the final version of the game, but with some differences.

  • The texture of the Mystery Box receipt notice looks different.
  • The texture of the walls is also different.
  • The texture used in the first level of Grisly Manor is CastleScene1.png, the final game uses CastleScene3.png instead.
