Nintendo Direct Announcement#
Watch on YouTubeThe game was first announced during the 08/29/2012 Nintendo Direct, which featured a short presentation by Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino. It showed a couple clips of cutscenes, as well as two puzzles. Notable differences are:
- Layton is shown speaking to Javier on the beach in San Grio. In the final game, the only characters that speak to him there are Luke and Emmy.
- Luke is shown speaking to an excited Scarlett in the middle of Torrido with Emmy beside him, declaring that they must go to a cave outside of town. This exact exchange is not present in the final version.
- The 'Nose to Nose' puzzle has no move counter.
- In the clip of the swordfight cutscene, when Layton goes to attack Descole, Descole looks back as if taken by surprise.
- Instead of flying in on a makeshift hanglider and dropping down, Layton swings in on a crane.
- The initial clash between Descole's sword and Layton's pipe is at a different angle.
- The airships during the swordfight have a different design.
- A clip is featured showing Emmy standing in front of a window or door and opening her eyes.
TGS 2012 Trailer#

Cutscene Differences#
There's quite a lot of these. A couple of the clips featured were also present in the Nintendo Direct announcement, but still ended up never making it to the final product or being altered in some way. (A few may also have been created or edited solely for the presentation as well.)
- Aurora's eyes are open when the gem on her forehead begins to glow, and illuminate shortly after.
- The whirlpool Aurora creates is larger when the camera initially pans out to show it, instead of starting small and growing in size.
- The camera pans left instead of right when showing the group shocked by Aurora's powers.
- A clip is featured showing Aurora and Emmy standing on the stairs to Bronev's headquarters.
- A clip is featured also showing a bird's-eye view of the headquarters.
- When standing on a ledge atop the headquarters' roof, Aurora is not holding the Keystone.
- A clip is featured of Layton running either from or towards something.
- A clip is featured of Luke either yelling or gasping.
- A section of The Nest with a moving trolley is shown.
- Aurora stands on the aforementioned ledge from a side angle instead of a bottom one, and is also not holding the Keystone.
- During the swordfight, Layton seemingly falls to the ground before swinging again at Descole.
- The Targent hitmen are shown from the opposite angle, and in a different order.
- A clip is featured of Layton and Luke atop Bronev's headquarters looking back at something.
- A clip is featured of Aurora desperately reaching out, likely when she is standing on the ledge.
- The clip of Emmy in front of a window/door returns, this time accompanied by her saying "Sayonara, reiton kyouju" ("Goodbye, Professor Layton") followed up with "Kyouju to no tabi hontoni tanoshi katadesu" ("It was fun traveling with the professor") as it fades to the game's release year.
Game Differences#
- The people standing on the stairway to central Froenborg are back further.
- The lamp hanging inside the igloo and the can and frying pan on top of the stove are absent.
- The graphic used on the Touch Screen when investigating has sharp edges and is a darker shade of brown.
- The text box used when picking up hint coins also has sharp edges instead of rounded ones.
- Layton is shown talking to Clark Triton and his wife Brenda near the tyrannosaurus rex skeleton inside the museum. You only talk to Clark in the room with the artifacts and Brenda never shows up in the museum in the final game.
- The sunlight seeping through the trees in Lakeside Forest is brighter.
- The tail on Hazel's model is more polygonal.
- Desmond Sycamore is shown introducing himself to Dariya Kolum in Kodh, with Luke beside him. He does not speak to her in the final game.
- Emmy is shown having a conversation with Chestnut about the differences between London and Phong Gi, with Luke beside her. She does not speak to him in the final game.
- Javier is shown speaking to the professor and Emmy on the beach in San Grio again.
- The exchange between Scarlett, Luke, and Emmy is shown once more, this time with Scarlett talking about persuading the townsfolk of Torrido. Again, this conversation is not present in the final game.
- The 'Nose to Nose' puzzle has no move counter.
- The 'Shunting into Sidings' puzzle has a completely different track layout on the Touch Screen than any of the three featured in the final version. There's also an image of the train that the player is supposed to recreate in the top-left corner.
Other Differences#
- One of the transitions in between the cutscene clips features art of Emmy, Layton, and Luke inside a submarine, grabbing wreckage of some kind. You never go underwater during the game, so the exact context of this is unknown.
TGS 2012 Demo#
A playable demo for Azran Legacy was available at Tokyo Game Show 2012 to go along with the trailer, allowing patrons to experience the first ten minutes of a slightly-altered version of the current build. Footage of the full ten minutes and/or the absolute furthest point one can go has never been uploaded, nor has the demo itself been dumped, so anything else it may contain not shown in the video is currently unknown. Differences#
Given that the beginning of the demo warns of differences from the final version, simply because it's a shortened trial, many of the elements not present in final versions -- especially the puzzles -- could be intentional for presentation purposes. Regardless, notable differences and elements featured are:
- The 'Airship's Destination' puzzle is not offered at the beginning. As a matter of fact, Layton and the others are never shown meeting or speaking to Raymond, although Raymond is shown piloting the Bostonius. This may have been left out on purpose to cut back on time.
- All of the early UI designs are present here.
- Layton and Luke pick up one of the Daily Puzzles from a post box while talking about the Daily Puzzle service.
- The 'Nose to Nose' puzzle has no move counter, like what was shown in the trailer.
- Macaw/Rook seems to give out the 'A Troublesome Tent' puzzle, which features him and Plover standing on the outside of the tent while the player has to build around Robin/Bishop, instead of the standard Puzzle Lads and Lasses taking those places. Something to note is that in the final game, Plover is not met in Froenborg -- where the demo primarily takes place -- at all.
