Early Character Designs#

Neptune#

HDN1-Neptune_original_look.png

In Neptune's original look, she is depicted with light blue hair with white gradients, red eyes, long side locks tied at the end with planet-like balls, a white headgear with a purple visor, white arm garters, a blue swimsuit, and a white see-through dress with gold accents worn over her swimsuit. Her attire resembles her namesake, the roman god Neptune.

Other designs#

In the first image:

  • Style A: She's depicted with orange hair, blue eyes, two white futuristic hair decors, and a white-orange dress with arrows resembling Neptune's trident. Her side locks are shorter, and her back hair reaches to her neck.
  • Style B: Similar to "Style A", but her hair decors are reduced to two small mouse pad-like accessories, her dress is redesigned to have a showgirl skirt with a white swimsuit underneath, white thigh-high socks and gloves, and the top of her dress has four blue buttons and a d-pad in the middle.
  • Style C: She's given a complete overhaul from the last two designs. Here, she is depicted with pink hair, purple eyes (later used for her final design), a maid-like dress with white on top and magenta at the bottom, white detached sleeves, and a white ribbon sticking behind it. Her hair decors would be simplified into two small circles.

In the second image:

  • Ver.3: She retains her orange hair, suit, and blue eyes; but she has robot ears, a white, sleeveless shrug with a blue orb, orange gloves, an RCA cable bow on the back, and white shoes.
  • Ver.5: She has a different suit on; she wears a white dress with orange accents, same with her gloves and socks. She also wears a white headgear with a blue visor.
  • Ver.8-5: She wears a modified version of her Styled C design, with more emphasis on her technological features. She also has two HDMI cables at the back of her dress.
  • Ver.9-2: She wears a magenta school uniform, an aspect that would later be reused for MegaTagmension Blanc + Neptune Vs Zombies.
  • Ver.10-5: She has blonde hair, her parka has blue accents, she appears to have controller-like buttons at the end of her sleeves, and the design of her socks and shoes are different.

Furthermore, all of the early iterations of Neptune that depicted her orange seem to indicate she was going to represent the Dreamcast, Sega's fifth and final video game console before ditching the console wars, which could explain why she begins the game as an amnesiac with no memories of her time as a CPU. This would later be repurposed for Uzume Tennouboshi from Megadimension Neptunia VII.

Purple Heart#

  • Body Styles: Her hair clips are less designed, her hair is shorter, her jumpsuit is designed differently and noticeably shows more skin.
  • Style A: Her original HDD design would've been identical to her human form. Her body suit is white with pink accents, her head processor would be a halo with a CD disc, her shoulder processor would have controllers shaped like the Sega Genesis, her hip processor had a bulkier exterior and appeared to be shaped like an optional disc drive, her leg processor was shaped like a wing, and her wings would be that of an angel.
  • Style B: Similar to "Style A", except her attire is black with pink accents and exposes her abdomen. The head and shoulder processor would be slimmed down, her hip processor would include a CD disc, her leg processor is absent, and her wings would be similar to her original Purple processor, except they’re purple instead of yellow with purple accents.
  • Style C: Her design is much older, she has large pigtails, a headgear, and her processor is similar to her "Style B" design.
  • Style D: Similar to "Style C", except she's now colored, the secondary color of her jumpsuit, previously dark pink, is now a gradient of purple and magenta, her hair and eyes are also gradients with purple, pink and white, and she has a different headgear on.
  • Style E: Her design underwent a complete overhaul, going for a purple, single braided ponytail, purple eyes, a less show-y black jumpsuit with purple accents, silver armor with blue orbs, and the two hair ornaments making up d-pads.
  • Pre-final draft: Her design is closer to her current form, but her shoes have armor plates, and the decors tying the bottom of her hair have two rings orbiting around them.

Noire/Black Heart#

  • Some early designs depicted her pigtails as shorter or medium-length, as opposed to reaching down to her hips. The texture of her pigtails were also different, ranging from big and puffy, to short and curly; some didn’t even depict her with pigtails at all.
  • The ribbons on her hair were more puffier, often with details, while some stuck with the standard four-layered hair ribbon. One design had her ribbons be puffballs.
  • Her attire was more Victorian-like, with heavy details on her outfit, longer sleeves, shorter gloves, frillier dresses, and some had her in armor.
  • Originally, her weapon of choice was supposed to be a gun. It was traded for a closed-ranged rapier in the final game, with the choice of guns as a weapon being repurposed for Uni in Hyperdimension Neptunia mk2.

Her suit was supposed to be white instead of black. She also had a mark on her left leg and right cheek. In addition, her original attire had a miniskirt, her neckline reached to her abdomen, her gloves didn’t have spikes, and she wore a headgear at the top of her head.

Blanc/White Heart#

  • One of the biggest departures from her early design is that, instead of a hat, she originally wore a bow on her head (albeit at the back instead of the top). However, the bow would become an optional accessory in the game.
  • Earlier outfit designs had her wear a standard winter jacket, a pirate-themed, more tomboyish attire, a modified gothic lolita dress, a princess-like dress, and a dress closer to her current design, but with a darker jacket.
  • Like Noire, she also would've had a gun as her weapon of choice.
  • Her bobbed hair was more scruffier and curlier compared to the mostly straight bob of her final design.
  • As for White Heart, her design is left completely unchanged, but she has a mark on her right cheek and back.

MP Test Girl#

The initial version of what would become Blanc. Apart from the bow, she is depicted as a shy, feeble young girl with light blue hair and wearing a blue version of Blanc's main attire.

Vert/Green Heart#

  • Her dress, while the least changed from her final design, was more detailed. Her breast neckline would've been straight instead of arched, and the translucent area of her dress covered said neckline. She also had detached sleeves (a design choice reused for her Ultra Dimension counterpart in Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory). One design depicted her in a black dress.
  • The braids on her hair were supposed to be on the top of her head instead of at the back. Even at the back, it was originally going to be shaped like a curl. She also originally had "hair intakes", which was reused exclusively for her HDD form.

The "intakes" on her hair were much longer, and her second HDD design was more revealing. She also has a mark on her right cheek and left torso.

Furthermore, the CPUs sans Purple Heart lack the power symbols in their eyes in their pre-draft designs.

Compa#

Nisa#

  • She originally had curly pigtails, a shrug jacket with either a skirt or shorts with open pants, and a bra instead of tin foil wrapped around her chest. She also wore a visor instead of goggles. One of her designs also wore an eyepatch.
  • One design depicted her with red hair with matching red eyes, a white scarf, thigh-high boots, and a grayer version of her final outfit.

Gust#

  • Since she originated as a mascot for her namesake company, which predated Neptunia as a series by a whole decade, her design instead had the size of her outfit altered; the second design depicts her with longer sleeves, while the third design depicts her with smaller gloves.
  • However, in the "Neptunia + mk2 art book", initial redesigns of Gust were considered.
    • Her first design had her in a pink outfit with a bunny-eared hoodie, as well as depicted with blonde hair and green eyes. Her design was inspired by another character made by Tsunako, Yoshino Himekawa from Date-A-Live.
    • Her second design depicted her with red eyes, while her outfit had purple accents instead of yellow. Her boots here are orange-brown instead of yellow, and her hoodie is traded for a hat. Her hair is designed like a hime cut, with her bangs reaching only her forehead.

5pb.#

She had a more gothic lolita design, especially in her earlier designs, as well as the color of her outfits being entirely black instead of black with pink accents, and her eyes being blue instead of magenta in her first design. Additionally, she was originally portrayed as a yandere to Neptune, being obsessed with her to an unhealthy degree, which is further emphasized by her initial weapons being a mace, a knife, and a crowbar, instead of a guitar. The 'yandere obsessed with a CPU' aspect would be used for Megadimension Neptunia VII, with K-Sha being a yandere to Noire.

RED#

Her original design had a yellow outfit with purple and pink accents, instead of a red outfit with black and yellow accents. She also had a pink normal ponytail instead of an R-shaped ponytail. Her second and third designs had a crown, with her second design donning a princess-like outfit instead. Furthermore, all of her early designs depicted her with a flat chest, or noticeably smaller boobs, with the fourth design in particular writing her as a 10-year-old, which would’ve made her the first character with a confirmed age, seconded only to that of Peashy in Victory.

Histoire#

She was supposed to be a normal girl instead of a fairy guardian living inside a book. The left design depicted her with arched bangs with a mark in the middle, two curly pigtails, three floating diamonds on her pigtails, and what appears to be a church outfit; in another design, her hair was longer, she wore a longer dress with chains at the bottom, and was barefoot.

Her fairy self also had different outfit designs despite mostly remaining the same; one design had her wearing a white version of her main outfit, while another had her wearing a graduation outfit, complete with a mortarboard. Her book was also supposed to be technologically-advanced compared to the mystical book of the final game.

Arfoire#

Arfoire had the least design alterations compared to the other characters. However, her outfit, instead of being skin-tight pants, were supposed to be shorts with fishnet leggings, the back of her witch's dress had a diamond-themed pattern, and she had a thorned flower hat as her hair accessory instead of a witch’s hat.

Early HUD#

The HUD has various differences from the final game:

Early Version#

  • The "Order of Action" and enemy lifebar have different designs.
    • The enenmy lifebar had a monster skull instead of the "Neptune" console, its interface was smaller and more glossy , and the health bars were bigger, and didn't have small text placed on its left.
    • The "Order of Action" bar also had a smaller interface, the little boxes showing the characters were smaller and squeezed next each other instead of an inch apart, and the interface itself was white instead of black.
  • The Combo indicator and AP meter haven't been implemented yet.
  • The Item meter is colored differently. Instead of glowing orange, the colors appeared to be glowing a lighter shade of orange.

Near Final Version#

The HUD has been redesigned with the addition of combos and an AP meter.
