Gran Turismo 4 Mobile#
Gran Turismo for the PSP was originally announced as "Gran Turismo 4 Mobile" at the console's launch at E3 2004, with launch date set for April 2005. However, the game was notably absent from the 2004 Tokyo Game Show and then from E3 2005, a year after it was first announced, and while Polyphony Digital were busy developing the series' then-future on the PlayStation 3, the project went into complete silence. Kazunori Yamauchi assured to the gaming press in 2006 that the project was still in development, but by January 2008, IGN reported that GameStop had cancelled pre-orders for the game as originally titled.
Following the reannouncement of the game at E3 2009, it was reported that its original proposed title, along names such as "Gran Turismo Spyder", were rejected from being used as they did not represent a "fully-specced Gran Turismo".
Based on the "GT5M" codename (mentioned below), the game's inner workings appear to be based on GT5 during the transition from Gran Turismo 5 Prologue to the full title's pre-release show builds from that period, rather than on GT4's codebase; while this may have indicated a development reset from "GT4 Mobile" codebase (if work on it did occur), it is unknown when such reset began.
Gamescom 2009#
- A "course_spec_gt5m" placeholder track info can be seen when hovering over a track. This is one of few public sightings of the "GT5M" codename.
- Dirt tracks are shown as locked; it is unknown if it is related to the car (the Ford GT) or the demo.
