This page details pre-release information and/or media for DmC: Devil May Cry.
DmC was first shown in TGS 2010, featuring a lankier version of Dante who was a tormented soul taking his anger out on the demons around him and a grittier looking world. After getting heavy backlash from fans, the game's tone and aesthetics were changed significantly over the next 2 years of development.
TGS 2010 Announcement Trailer, 17 Sept 2010#
- A young Dante is seen being interrogated in a youth detention facility. Dante's early life is never shown directly in the final game aside from his ghost child form and flashback paintings in Home Truths.
- While his clothes are very similar, Dante's face and hair are very different compared to the release version. More of his hair is white compared to the patch he gets in the final game after obtaining Devil Trigger. Dante has 3 white trinkets hanging from his neck instead of a red amulet. His eyes are a brown-red color instead of blue.
- Dante is seen smoking both during his fight with the Stygians and at the end of the trailer.
- The Stygians and Ebony and Ivory look pretty close to their final versions.
- The DmC logo at the end is red instead of black and white.
- 01:01: Dante does a Demon Stomp with a different pose (and without Eryx). This style of Stomp can be restored in the final game by setting Dante's m_fcpStompType variable to 0 with console commands.
- 01:06: Dante is seen using a trident weapon that was cut from the final game.
- 01:23: Dante uses a whip to throw a car at the approaching Stygians. Developer statements have confirmed that environmental interactions like these were going to be in the final game but were cut due to gameplay concerns and scope.
E3 Trailer, 7 Jun 2011#
- This first gameplay trailer shows environments from Mission 3: Bloodline, Mission 4: Under Watch, and Mission 6: Secret Ingredient. Enemies and Dante's weapons have different sound effects and visuals. Bloodline's main arena is bigger. Pathos' have blue wings instead of yellow ones.
- Dante's face, hair, and clothes are closer to final. His coat is much redder and his shirt has a demon with wings around it.
- Dante plants Rebellion into the ground to use Devil Trigger. This animation would stick around for a while before getting removed later in development to preserve gameplay flow.
- Corpses stick around in the trailer. In the final game, they're set to disappear one second after an enemy is killed.
- 01:45: Dante's Demon Stomp was changed to the final game's pose. Dante performs Demon Stomp without Eryx. At this point in development, Demon Stomp was likely a Demon + Jump move.
- 01:55: Drop's fault line knocks a Tyrant into the ground. In the final game, Tyrants have no reaction to this attack.
- 02:08: The Succubus has an earlier design with a much more grotesque face.
Gamescom Trailer, 16 Aug 2011#
- The trailer features Mission 3: Bloodline, Mission 4: Under Watch, Mission 5: Virility. More details of Bloodline's main arena can be seen: the fountain has flowing water and the giant mask that would have scanned the area during the level. Pathos' have blue wings instead of yellow ones.
- Like the E3 trailer, corpses still stick around.
- 00:21: Death Coil has a different final strike that launches the enemy forward into the air.
- 00:37: The Ravager has a teal/green Enrage aura instead of a yellow one.
TGS 2011 Trailer, 15 Sept 2011#
- Dante's face and hair are a lot closer to final, though he still has the 3 trinkets on his neck from TGS 2010.
- 00:40: Dante performs 2 cinematic finishers in the middle of combat with the Rebellion and Arbiter. This type of cinematic finish with a slowmo shot was moved to the end of combat in the final game to not interrupt the flow of combat. The finishers shown here have unique animations while in the final game they're only slowmo shots with some camera movement.
- 01:01: The Succubus has an earlier design with a much more grotesque face.
- 01:07: Like the E3 trailer, there's a cinematic sword plant sequence for Devil Trigger.
- 01:12: Demon Stomp is still performed without Eryx.
