I was fiddling with the game out of boredom and I found the "current stage" address. Sadly, I didn't find anything interesting... well, unless you count Flame Mammoth's frozen stage having its own unique value. Otherwise, it's exactly as expected.

00 = Intro Stage 01 = Penguin Stage 02 = Chameleon Stage
03 = Eagle Stage 04 = Octopus Stage 05 = Armadillo Stage
06 = Kuwanger Stage 07 = Mammoth Stage 08 = Mandrill Stage
09 = Sigma Palace 1 0a = Sigma Palace 2 0b = Sigma Palace 3
0c = Sigma Palace 4 0d = Mammoth Stage (Alt)

I haven't figured out the value for the alternate stages yet, but I assume they're tied to progression or character choice. Also, I tried going to Sigma Stage 4 with Vile. It just plays X's cutscenes, though Vile falls on his butt when Wolf Sigma appears... so that's funny.
