Unpacking Games#

Viewing the game files will always require unpacking them (unless you are viewing the assets in Smithbox versions 2.09 or higher).

To unpack games, use either UXM by Nordgaren, or Nuxe by JKAnderson.

To unpack BND files, use WitchyBND by ividyon.

Tools#

For general viewing, use Smithbox, a successor of DSMapStudio made by vawser. It has a Map Editor, Model Viewer, Param Editor, Text Editor, and more. Do note that textures will look darker than they actually are (as of version 2.1.2)

For viewing and extracting audio, use foobar2000 along with the vgmstream plugin.

For viewing Animations, use DSAnimStudio (DSAS) by meowmaritus. To use DSAS:

  • Click "File", then "Open..."
    • Load an anibnd.dcx file, which can be found in the game directory (\DARK SOULS III\Game\chr)
    • Enter the 'Game Data Directory' within the "Setup Workspace" pop-up
      • You won't need to enter in the 'ModEngine Directory' since you are only datamining.
      • Do not check any of the three boxes for the sake of accuracy to the game files.
    • In the "Choose Character Model for 'c****.anibnd.dcx'" prompt, select the chrbnd.dcx file with the same ID (c**** being any ID).

Use c0000 for player animations, but for finding a character's ID use the table of Character IDs from SoulsModding.com.
