This page details development materials of Shadow Warrior (1997).

To do:
Likely more.

  • If you have knowledge of Chuck Jones' cut Skeleton character (and if it is the Skeleton Priest), add information about it here.
  • Compare the Fish, Rabbit, Ninja, Zena from the final game and this CD.

Source Code#

On April 1st, 2005, 3D Realms would release the source code of Shadow Warrior. The release was primarily cleaned up by former Sunstorm Interactive and then-3D Realms developer Charlie Weiderhold.

The source code contains a few interesting things, such as commented-out code/useless code that's absent in the game itself.

Fists of Fury#

The Fists of Fury support more than one type of attack mode, two of which vary the damage, and one of which reduces damage to one third. Only the default strike has a condition available in the source code, all other instances are commented out or filtered by the pre-processor.

Multiplayer Bots#

Shadow Warrior includes bot play, for single-player multiplayer games. Of course, they can't be enabled, as the "-bots" command line parameter is commented out. The leaked April 4th, 1997 prototype has this command working.

Based on the source code, it appears the bots attempt to emulate a player. Default decisions take place in the following order:

  • Always operate everything (even if it means rapidly opening/closing certain doors).
  • Picks a visible player, uses them as a target. Disengages only if the target is too far away, out of vision, or dead.
  • Selects the weapon to use. Gives priority to the nuke, then from "highest-tier" weapons to the lowest.
  • Uses the portable medikit.
  • Jumps if a rocket is fired, otherwise tries some evasion.
  • Attacks the target using whichever weapon. Attacks are made more frequently if gameplay is set to a higher skill level.

Scrapped Enemies#

Eel#

The "Eel" is a fish monster that was cut not long before the game was done. Animations for the Eel have been taken from the Doug Wood Network CD.

Lava Boss#

Moves around with this one frame of animation, but mirrors to give the illusion of walking. While being hit, the Lava Boss will randomly teleport. Its means of attacking is by firing large rocks at the player.

Wanton Destruction Maps#

On April 2nd, 2004, Charlie Weiderhold would release some maps from the then-unreleased expansion, Wanton Destruction.

The release can be downloaded from here.

Doug Wood Network Files CD#

To do:
The .pcx files in the ZENA folder use an 8bpc version of the color palette, whereas the final game's color palette is 6bpc.

On April 21st, 2025, an asset CD containing images for 3D Realms' website and a few development graphics from Shadow Warrior was released.

The CD was intended for Douglas "Doug" Wood and would later end up in the possession of the late Stephen Hornback. Both had worked on the game as artists.

Removed/Changed Directories#

The extensionless dougart file has text suggesting some content was removed from this CD at some point. "Joe" refers to Joe Seigler, who was the maintainer of 3D Realms webpages back in the day.

There are several early graphics for the Guardian Head weapon.

To do:
Document the earlier KICK.FLI in the main directory of the CD. This version lacks the pots.
