Items (どうぐ)#

Rejected Names#

Early Name

Final Name

Explanation

Reason for Rejection

Rapi Ball

Veloz Ball

Literal translation.

Fine.
*This name looks similar to "RAPID BALL" (Fast Ball), isn't that confusing?

Joya Ball

Gloria Ball

"Joya" means "Jewel", and is the shortest word in Spanish that expresses "Precious".

Not accepted by legal.
→The following is a quote from NOA's legal department:
In Spanish, "JOYA BALL" is not legally acceptable. A controller made by HAL Laboratory a long time ago was called JOYBALL, and the names are too similar.

Brillosfera

Lustresfera

Literal translation. "Brillo" is a slight twist on "pearl".

"BRILLO" seems to be used for "Glitter Mail" and "Bright Powder". This item plays an important role in the game, so we would like to have a name that does not overlap with other items, if possible.

Roca Solar

Roca Calor

Literal translation. Used to mean "hot as the sun".

We're concerned about the similarity to "PIEDRA SOLAR" (Sun Stone). Could you name it using a word other than "Solar"?

Ll. Cósmica

Ll. Galaxia

Literal translation.
→Depends on the name of "Team Galactic".
*Is "Cósmica" the term that corresponds to "Team Galactic"? Please use a word that starts with Team Galactic's trademark "G".
→Terminology error.

*Don't use (mistake).

Plumasselia

Pluma Lunar

Literal translation.

Since this is an item related to Cresselia, please unify it with the move "Lunar Dance".

Finalized Names#

Name

Explanation

Barrita Plus

It's not possible to use a term related to the "Old Chateau". In Spanish, "Old" means "gone bad", which isn't suitable. "Barrita" [(food) bar] here corresponds to "Gateau" in the English name. And since this item cures all abnormal conditions, we added "Plus" to make it clear that it has an exceptional effect.
→It has the same effect as "Full Heal", so it doesn't necessarily have an exceptional effect, but it's fine as long as it's a suitable name for a recovery item.
→Suitable

Plume Lunar

This is a combination of "Lunar Dance" (spanish: "Danza Lunar") and "Wing".

Moves (わざ)#

Early Name

Final Name

Explanation

Reason for Rejection

Afán de Cura

Deseo Cura

Literal translation.

"Doom Desire" is "DESEO OCULTO". Is it possible to make the "wish" part the same?

Represalia

Repr. Metal

Literal translation.

Does "REPERSALIA" mean "retaliation"? Please add a word that corresponds to "metal".
* "Metal Claw" is "GARRA-METAL"

Venganza

Vendetta

We used Venganza, a very literal translation, because the previous games already used the word for "Bide". "Vendetta" would be better. The word is of Italian origin, but is usually used in Spanish to mean "Payback" or "Revenge".

*Don't use (Bide already uses "VENGANZA").

Afán de Cura

Conjuro

Literal translation.

"Doom Desire" is "DESEO OCULTO". Is it possible to make the "wish" part the same?

Onda Umbría

Pulso Umbrío

Literal translation.

"Water Wave" is "HIDROPULSO". Is there a clear difference between using "pulso" and "onda"?

Estalladoras

Bomba Germen

Like last time, we omitted the word "Seed". "Estalladoras" comes from the verb "Estallar" (to explode), which gives the impression of the "Bomb" part of the English name.

If possible, we would like to see the word "seed" included to indicate the type of the move.
*This is not just a request for this move, but for all other move names as well.
Is it possible to get around the character limit by using "bomba" like in the previous "Sludge Bomb" and "Egg Bomb"?

Bomba Semilla

Literal translation.

文字があふれるのでNG

Bomba Pepita

"Bomba Pepita" / Literally "Pip Bomb".
"Pepita" specifically refers to the seed of a fruit, so we're not sure if this is the word you wanted. But using another synonym for "Seed" would result in "Semen", which is something we would like to avoid at all costs.
→ In cases where the choice is tricky, we leave it to the judgment of our translation staff, who are closest to the sensibilities and sensibilities of local users, but we believe that "Bomba Pepita" is fine.

*Don't use (the general feedback was that "Bomba Germen" is more suitable).

Onda Dragón

Pulso Dragón

Literal translation.

"Water Wave" is "HIDROPULSO". Is there a clear difference between using "pulso" and "onda"?

Diente Rayo

Colm. Rayo

"Poison Fang" is "COLMILLO VEN."
Is it possible to unify "fang"?

Diente Hielo

Colm. Hielo

Diente Ígneo

Colm. Ígneo

Tiro Espejo

Disp. Espejo

Is it possible to give this move a name similar to "Mud Shot" (DISP. LODO), which has a similar effect?

Foco de Luz

Foco Respl.

We're currently using "RESPLANDOR" for "Luster Purge". Since they have similar effects, we'd like to see the "Luster" part be more consistent, if possible.

Descarga

Chispazo

*Don't use (same word as the ability "Download").

Brisa Aciaga

Vien. Aciago

Is it possible to change the name of this move to "VIENTO XXX" ("XXX Wind"), similar to "Silver Wind" and "Icy Wind", which have similar effects?

Location Names (地名)#

Rejected Names#

Note that the Team Galactic HQ entry is mistakenly assigned its early name in the "Final" column. This will be amended in the table below.

Early Name

Final Name

Explanation

Reason for Rejection

Ciudad Marisma

Ciudad Pradera

Literally "Marsh City". The Spanish name for this city is very direct, seeing how it's surrounded by swampland.

Name it with "meadow" in mind, rather than "swamp".

Ciudad Roca

Ciudad Rocavelo

Literally "Stone City", fitting since this is where stone is mined.

Rather than focusing on stone, would it be possible to give it a name that also includes the meaning of "veil"?
Alternatively, please use a name that uses "veil" as its main basis.

Ciudad Névix

Ciudad Puntaneva

Almost literally, "Névix" comes from "nieve" (snow). Snow is a defining feature of this town, but we changed it to a more refined name.

Is it possible to add the "point" aspect?

Vía Desolada

Senda Desolada

Literal translation.

"SENDA ÍGNEA" (Fiery Path) and "RUTA HELADA" (Ice Path) are already-existing examples. Since "Vía" is also used for "XXXのさんぽみち", please use "SENDA" for "ぬけみち" if possible.

Templo Névix

Templo Puntaneva

Literal translation. Please refer to Snowpoint City's entry above.

Depends on the name of Snowpoint City.

G[u]arida Galaxia

Base Galaxia

Literal translation. →Until now, "XXX Hideout" became "GUARIDA XXX". Could this be unified?
→Unfortunately, we cannot change it as you suggest. "Guarida" refers to a hideout. Team Galactic's hideout is a very large building with a sign on the outside, so we strongly recommend keeping it as "Base". Frankly, it would be very strange to call it "Guarida".
→In the story, the name used is "Team Galactic Building", which fits the intended image for this building.
"Hideout" is not the name of a building, but rather a name that indicates its role.
Its role is the same as the previous "Rocket Hideout" and "Magma Hideout", so please use "Guarida" for consistency.
Even with the above in mind, does it seem strange?

*Don't use (it feels strange to call it "Guarida").

Zona Batalla

Bahía Gresca

Literal translation.

We felt that using "Zona Batalla" would confuse players. The places located on this island are also called "Zona": Zona Combate (Fight Area), Zona Sobrevivir (Survival Area), Zona Descanso (Resort Area)

It would be better not to use the same name as the island and the areas within it:
Many testers reported that this was very confusing. For this reason, we decided to use the name "Isla Gresca" (literally "Battle Island").

Isla Gresca

The word "Gresca" retains the meaning of "Battle" and sounds like an actual place name. "Isla" (Island) fits the image the player sees on the map and the description of this area as an island.
→ Avoid "Isla".
This is because the name "Battle Zone" does not refer to the entire island, but rather to a specific area on the island.
(The idea is that the island has a separate name.)
→It says, "The 'Battle Zone' does not refer to the entire island, but rather to a specific area of the island". However, today, through the Testing Q&A file, we received the following information from NCL:
"There is no sign, but the Battle Zone refers to the entire island that you can enter after entering the Hall of Fame. I think this can be inferred from conversations with the Rival and the boatman at the Snowpoint City dock." (Nakayama, 18/Apr./07)
Considering the above information, we must again suggest that we stick with the word "Isla" (Island). Does "Battle Zone" refer to only a portion of the island, which includes the "Fight Area," "Survival Area," and "Resort Area," respectively?

In the game, we have made it clear that the "Battle Zone" is located is an island or part of a continent. Please avoid names such as "XXX Island" and consider names that refer to areas.

EIG

GTS

Literal translation.

Could it be possible to abbreviate it to "GTS" in Spanish as well?

Almacenes Roca

C. C. Rocavelo

Literal translation. Please refer to Veilstone City's entry above.

Previously, "Department Store" was referred to as "CENTRO COMERCIAL de XXX". Would it be possible to unify this?

Gimnasio Marisma

Gimnasio Pradera

Literal translation.

Depends on the finalized name for the city.

Gimnasio Roca

Gimnasio Rocavelo

Gimnasio Névix

Gimnasio Puntaneva

The section for the event Pokémon locations is especially messy here: each entry has a copy of the finalized name in the "rejected" category", always followed by a copy of the English name. The table below will omit this bloat.

Final Name

Sala conciertos

Concierto Evento

Literal translation.

These are names of places and events that actually exist, outside the game. As this will likely be related to future developments, including distribution, we will likely need to coordinate with TPC.

Fiesta PKMN

Centro Pokémon

Finalized Names#

Name

Explanation

Pueblo Hojaverde

Literally "Greenleaf Town". We added "green" to the English word "leaf" to reflect the town's green roofs. It gives a fresh and pure feeling.

Pueblo Arena

Literally "Sand Town", but due to character limitations we couldn't keep the connection to Beauty, but this is the best literal translation we can get.

Pueblo Aromaflor

This name is literal, but we reversed the order of "flower" and "aroma" because they sound better in Spanish.

Pueblo Sosiego

Literal translation.

Pueblo Caelestis

A literal translation which still retains its association with the word "celestial."

Ciudad Jubileo

It's a mostly literal translation, but due to character limitations, we couldn't use the word "life."

Ciudad Canal

Literally "Canal City", but "lave" (to bathe/wash) could not be used due to character limitations.

Ciudad Pirita

Literally "Pyrite Town", so the Spanish translation is correct, and the faded yellow of the town's roads also matches "pyrite".

Ciudad Vetusta

Literally "Ancient City", which gives the impression of a town with a long history, and it also sounds great as a town name.

Ciudad Corazón

It's a pretty literal translation, but due to character limitations "home" couldn't be used. But there's a connection to "heart", which symbolizes "gathering".

Ciudad Pradera

"Marisma" (swamp) has been changed to "Pradera" (pasture).

Ciudad Rocavelo

The name was changed to "Rocavelo" (a combination of "Rock" and "Veil") to include the meaning of veil.

Ciudad Marina

Literally "Sea City". The Spanish word brings to mind beautiful beaches.

Ciudad Puntaneva

The name was changed to "Puntaneva" (a combination of "Pointy" and "Nevada" (snowy)) to include the meaning of "point".

Montaña Dura

Literal translation. "Montaña" is a synonym for "Monte", so it's appropriate here. We also considered the name "Monte Duro", but Montaña Dura sounds better. We think this name gives the right impression. "Dura" is used for mountains that are difficult and steep to climb.

Bahía Gresca

"Bahía Gresca" (Battle Bay).
It complements the background and we're confident it fits the game.

Poké-reloj S.A.

Literal translation. Pokémon + "reloj" (to see). We added "S.A." (Sociedad Anónima, Limited Co.) at the end to make it sound Spanish.
[The translation listed here is incorrect, "reloj" actually means "watch".]

Casa Huellas

Literal translation. We strongly recommend that you keep this name.
"Huellas" and "Pisadas" are synonyms. Our language does not like to repeat words, so we avoided using the same name. If we standardized the name, it would become "Casa Huellas del Dr. Huellas", which sounds very unnatural in Spanish.

Categories (分類)#

Early Name

Final Name

Explanation

Reason for Rejection

Peonza

Casita

Literal translation.

It's like the children's game, "playing house". If that's what you mean, then it's fine.

Boca Sucia

Boca Tóxica

Apologies for the confusion. We suggest "Boca Sucia" (english: "Dirty Mouth"), a Spanish expression often used for people with dirty mouths, so it fits that image.

*Don't use ("Boca Tóxica" is better).

CazaBichos

Caza Bichos

Literal translation.

Changed due to omission in NOE's report.

Vampicorpio

Colmicorpio

Literal translation. It's a combination of "Vampire" and "Scorpion". After looking at the Pokémon Gliscor, we thought this name would fit perfectly.

Since it can't learn the move "Leech Life", we think the image of a "vampire" is misleading to players.
We understand that the name was inspired by this Pokémon's design, but we would like the "fang" and "scorpion" aspects to be more prominent for this Pokémon.

People Names (人名)#

Rejected Names#

Early Name

Final Name

Explanation

Reason for Rejection

César

León

Spanish names. Maya and César evoke jewels, meaning "power" and "brilliance", so these names seem perfectly appropriate.
→ Not allowed because it's used as the name of "Kurt" in Gold and Silver.
→ We realized that making such a change to a main character would require making over 90 changes to our files. This seems too risky at this stage of the project.
The existence of "César" from Gold and Silver doesn't seem to pose a problem: firstly, that version is quite obscure, and secondly, it's a commonly used name. As such, it shouldn't call back to any character in particular.
On the other hand, "César" conveys an image of power. The name comes from Julius Caesar, and it was not only a person's name, but also a title for an emperor.

We want to avoid reusing the names of major characters from previous games without clear intention. (There is no reason within the story for them to have the same names.)
We don't consider the characters from previous titles to be relics of the past. We believe they continue to thrive within the Pokémon world and can shine at any time.
We understand that changing the message and the amount of checking that comes with it will require a lot of work, but we hope you will understand our feelings.

Petreo

Acerón

"Petreo" is associated with nature, so it evokes strength and sounds imposing.

Doesn't "Petreo" mean "stone"? Would it be possible to give him a name that evokes "steel"?

Nívea

Inverna

Reminiscent of snow.

"Nívea" (Glacia) has already been used, so please consider a different name.

Mars

Venus

English.

*Don't use (Marte is a male name).

Jupiter

Ceres

*Don't use (Júpiter is a male name).

Ainhoa

Malta

Spanish name.

"Cheryl", "Mira", "Riley", "Marley", and "Buck" are characters that appear in similar events, and as such they were all named after grains to create a sense of unity. As long as you take that into consideration, the names are fine.

Mayco

Maiza

Ariel

Quinoa

Aitana

Sémola

Finalized Names#

Name

Explanation

León

We would like to change it to "León", meaning "power" and "brilliance".
Does "León" mean "lion"?
It's fine as long as players understand the meaning of "power, brilliance".
→Yes, the name "León" also means "Lion" in our language. In our culture, this animal is a symbol of kings and royalty, hence why we chose this name.

Maya

Spanish names. Maya and César evoke jewels, meaning "power" and "brilliance", so these names are perfectly appropriate.

Prof. Serbal

In Spanish, "Nanakamado" (rowan tree) is "Serbal", and it's also considered a talisman against witches.

Roco

"Roco" is reminiscent of "roca" (rock), so it's a perfect name in Spanish.

Brega

"Brega" is a fitting name as it evokes the word for "fight" [bregar].

Mananti

Reminiscent of "water springs" [manantial].

Mananti, el Destructor

Mananti evokes the image of a "water spring", and "Destructor" emphasizes strength. It sounds like a professional wrestler. "Destructor" is similar to "Destroyer" or "Crasher".

Fantina

"Fantina" evokes "fantasma" (Spanish for "illusion/ghost").

Acerón

The name is based on "Acero" (Spanish for "steel").

Inverna

Named after "Invierno" (winter) and evokes ice, water and cold.

Lectro

"Lectro" brings to mind "electricity," so it's a good fit.

Alecrán

"Alecrán" brings to mind "alacrán" (scorpion).

Gaia

"Gaia" is very relevant to the earth, so it's a good fit.

Fausto

"Fausto" is a name related to "fuego" (fire).

Delos

"Delos" is fitting as it relates to "oracles".

Venus

If it were made to sound like a woman's name, the planetary and galactic connotations would be lost. Mars is a male symbol in Western culture, so it can't be used for a female character, but Venus represents the feminine, so it fits perfectly here.

Ceres

If it were made to sound like a woman's name, the planetary and galactic connotations would be lost. We have chosen "Ceres", which is also a woman's name and is used in our culture to represent the moon, a symbol of femininity. We would like to keep it related to space.

Malta

Based on the Spanish word for the grain "malt", which sounds feminine in Spanish, so it's a good fit.

Maiza

Based on the Spanish word for the grain "corn", which sounds feminine in Spanish, so it's a good fit.

Quinoa

Named after a grain grown in the Andes. We chose it because it sounds like the name of a real person.

Sémola

Based on the Spanish word "semolina", a word related to grains. We chose it because it sounds like the name of a real person.

Bulgur

Based on the name given to various types of wheat. We chose it because it sounds like the name of a real person.

Jericor

Reminiscent of the town of Jerico, famous for its high walls.

Dr. Pisada

Literal translation, "PISADA" meaning "footprints". Please note that we have intentionally used synonyms for Footstep House [Casa Huellas] to avoid repeating the same word, which is considered bad in Spanish.

Accessories (アクセサリ)#

There seems to have been a mishap with the colored balloon entries, with the rejected names being plural, and the "finalized" ones singular. For reference, only the Pink and Yellow version of this accessory type depict a singular balloon.

The "Yellow Fluff" also has an early name in place of its "finalized" one.

Algodón Ocre

Algodón Amarillo

Literal translation. Means "Yellow Cotton".

Omission in NOE's report.
Changed to "Algodón Ámbar" to more closely match the color displayed on the actual screen.

Algodón Ámbar

Algodón Amarillo

"Algodón Ocre" was approved, but we changed it to "Algodón Ámbar" to more closely match the color displayed on-screen, but the change has not yet been reflected in the glossary. We apologize for the inconvenience.
→ I believe "Ámbar" means "Amber", but will players recognize that it's being used in reference to the color?
It's fine as long as it's understood as meaning "Amber Cotton (Algodón)".

[None listed. This accessory is known in Japan as "きいろのわたげ", with "きいろ" referring to the color yellow or an amber hue. A straightforward translation was ultimately preferred.]

Globos Rojos

Globo Rojo

"Poison Point" is "PUNTO TÓXICO". Since the effects of these abilities are not similar, please consider using a different name.

Adaptación

Adaptable

Literal translation.

Our testing team discovered that this ability had the same name as the move "Nature Power" in Spanish, so we needed to change the former to avoid confusion.

Certero

Francotirad.

"Sniper" can be translated as "Francotirador", but due to character limitations we chose "Accurate".

The described word does not match the proposed Spanish name.
