The following information comes from the XLS sheet 007004_【DP】伊語経緯FIX.xls, with translation notes appearing in [brackets].

Pokémon Names (ポケモン名)#

Name

Notes

Monferno

In Italian, "Inferno" means "Hell". This word is commonly used to mean "Hell", so in Italian it is more strongly associated with the image of hell than in English. However, because the beginning of the word is different, it is unlikely that "Monferno" would be associated with the word "Inferno".
→We checked with the relevant department within NOE and were told that it can be used without any problems in Italy, so there is no need for us to make any changes regarding this matter.

Infernape

"Infernape" is more reminiscent of the word "Inferno". Personally, I don't have any problems with this, but I think it would be a good idea to check with the Italian legal department and consumer support services.
→We checked with the relevant department within NOE and were told that it can be used without any problems in Italy, so there is no need for us to make any changes regarding this matter.

Items (どうぐ)#

Rejected Names#

Early Name

Final Name

Explanation

Reason for Rejection

Pietranima

Roccianima

Soul (anima) + Stone (pietra). Literal translation. The translation of "Spirit" would exceed the character limit. "Soul" also evokes something spiritual.

Could it be possible to change the "stone" part so that it can be distinguished from evolution stones?

Diamansfera

Adamasfera

Made from Diamond (Diamante) and (Sfera).

Could it be possible to replace "Diamond" with "Adamantine" and "Pearl" with "Pearlescent"?
A slight twist for these names would be best.

Perlasfera

Splendisfera

Made from Pearl (Perla) and Orb (Sfera).

Baccasibu

Baccacitrus

Made from Berry (Bacca) and Kasibu (カシブ).

We couldn't find "KASIBU" in the dictionary, what does it mean? If it refers to "Busshukan", then it's OK.

Vitalsfera

Assorbisfera

Literal translation.

"VITAL" is used for "Revive" and "Max Revive". Since they are completely different items with different effects, we would like to ask you to approach them using a different term.

Focalfascia

Focalnastro

Literal translation.

Since "FASCIA" is used to mean "bandana", please use a word that corresponds to "sash".

Pallanera

Ferropalla

Since it looks black in-game, a literal translation would be Black (Nera) + Ball (Palla).

Please use a name that makes it clear that it's an iron ball.

Sciarpeletta

Stolascelta

Literal translation.

To convey the effect of this item, "only being able to use the same move", please standardize the "Focus" part with the "Choice Band" and " Choice Specs", which have similar effects.
Should we also standardize "scarf" as "SCIARPA"?

Lentiscelte

Lentiscelta

Literal translation.

*Same as "Choice Scarf".
We are proceeding with "SCELTA" for "Choice" and "OCCHIALI"[*] for "Glasses". Would it be possible to combine these two names?

Stranincenso

Bizzoaroma

Literal translation.

"XXX Incense" is localized as "XXX AROMA". If there are no objections, please standardize it.

Roccincenso

Roccioaroma

Pienincenso

Gonfioaroma

Ondaincenso

Ondaroma

Rosaincenso

Rosaroma

Sorteincenso

Fortunaroma

Puroincenso

Puroaroma

Carta Punti

Scheda Punti

Literal translation.

"XXX Card" is localized as "SCHEDA XXX". Please standardize it.

Pokétch

PokéKron

Same as English.

*Don't use (Pokétch is very difficult to pronounce in Italian).

Pokéwatch

This exceeds the character limit.

Finalized Names#

Name

Explanation

Dolce Gateau

The direct Italian translation of "Old" used in English, "Vecchio", exceeds the character limit. As such, we used the word "Sweet" (Dolce) and came up with Dolce Gateau.

Lastraidro

Lastraspruzzo (literal translation) has 13 letters, so we used "Idro" (Hydro), which means "water". "Idro" was also the name of Ruby & Sapphire's Team Aqua, but "Idro" is often added to the end of a word to indicate water, so we don't think players will be confused.

Lastrabaco

Lastrainsetto (literal translation) is too long, so we used "Baco", another word meaning "insect".

Moves (わざ)#

Early Name

Final Name

Explanation

Reason for Rejection

Risarcimento

Rivincita

Literal translation.

*Don't use. In the Italian test, "Risarcimento" means "Payback"[*], and does not completely express "Revenge"[*].

Embargo

Divieto

Literal translation.

We checked our dictionary and found that "Embargo" refers to "embargo of trade". If you keep in mind that "it's impossible for the Pokémon to use its held item, and the Trainer can't use items on that Pokémon", then it's OK.

Psicomalia

Psicotrasfer

A combination of Psycho (Psico) and Suggestion (Malia). The Italian translation of the English word "Shift" exceeds the character limit.

Is it possible to use words that are more appropriate to the move, such as "transfer", "moving (to)", or "spreading", instead of "Suggestion"?

Neroimpulso

Neropulsar

Literal translation.

Could it be possible to standardize "Pulse", like how "Water Pulse" became "IDROPULSAR"?

Dragobotto

Dragopulsar

[None listed. From "drago" (dragon) and "botto" (blow).]

"Water Pulse" became "IDROPULSAR", so "pulse" should be standardized.

Geopotenza

Geoforza

Literal translation.

Until now, " Ancient Power" became "FORZANTICA" and "Nature Power" became "NATURFORZA". Please tell us why you decided to use "forza" and "potenza" differently. Also, could it be possible to standardize them to only "forza"?

Franamento

Slavina

Literal translation.

We checked our dictionary and it says that "FRANAMENTO" means "landslide, mountainslide". If "FRANAMENTO" evokes the image of an Ice-type move, then it's OK.

Fulminzanna

Fulmindenti

Literal translation.

We are currently using "Velenodenti" for "Poison Fang". Could it be possible to standardize the "fang" part?
Please let us know if there was any intention behind changing the word for "fangs" this time.

Gelozanna

Gelodenti

Rogozanna

Rogodenti

Cannonluce

Cannonflash

A combination of Light (Luce) and Cannon (Cannone). It fits perfectly, as the user gathers light energy and releases it all at once.

We are currently using "ABBAGLIANTE" for "Luster Purge". Since they have similar effects, we'd like the "Luster" part to be more consistent if possible.

Dragoraffica

Dragobolide

From Drago (Dragon) and Flurry (Raffica (repeated blows)).
Dragometeora doesn't sound quite right.

When it comes to the Japanese and English names, we had the meaning of "meteor shower" and "dragon" in mind. If possible, we would like you to use a similar naming approach, but if that is difficult, please use words that are appropriate for the move's animation, such as "meteorite" or "shooting star".

Fascioscossa

Raggioscossa

This name is a combination of Beam (Fascio) and Electric jolt (Scossa), since it's a beam of electricity that's fired at the opponent.

Until now, "Beam" has been localized as "RAGGIO". What was the intention behind changing it to "Fascio" this time?

Location Names (地名)#

Rejected Names#

Early Name

Final Name

Explanation

Reason for Rejection

Sentiero Fiore

Via Frangimare

The literal translation, "Sentiero Frangimare", wasn't used because it was too long. Since it is a place full of flowers that leads to Flower Paradise, we decided to use the literal translation of Path (Sentiero) and Fiore (Flower).

In previous games, "route" and "path" were translated as "CAMMINO XXX" and "VIA XXX". For example, can we use "VIA" to add to "Seabreak" [うみわれの]?

Campo di Lotta

Zona Lotta

Literal translation of Battle (Lotta) and Field (Campo).

*Don't use (doesn't suit the in-game appearance).

SSG

GTS

Acronym for Servizio Scambi Globali (Global Trade Service).

We believe that "GTS" is currently being considered as the globally unified name, but could you please confirm this?

S. Allenatori

Sc. Allenatori

The text file is labeled Scuola per Allenatori (old term), but in the Areaname file it must be shortened to S. Allenatori due to space limitations.

*Don't use. (Since there is space, it was decided to lengthen the abbreviation).

Palestra Evopoli

Pal. Evopoli

Literal translation.

We received feedback that we should use the abbreviated form for consistency with other gym games, so we have made the change.

Isola Distante

Terra Lontana

Literal translation.

Does "isola" also mean "land"?
It is used to not specify a specific location, so please use a name that is not limited to "island".

The section for the event Pokémon locations has dated comments from Elena Nardo, who worked on the Italian translation of Diamond and Pearl.

Early Name

Final Name

Explanation

Reason for Rejection

Pokémon Center

Centro Pokémon

The Italian translation of "Pokémon Center" is "Centro Pokemon", however, this seems to be referring to the real life "Pokemon Centers". This ensures consistency between Ruby and Sapphire in the RibbonInfo30 event cell and the Ribbonmsg update file.
Elena Nardo 07/05/08

*Don't use. In the Italian version of the games, "Pokémon Center" is written as "Centro Pokémon", so the abbreviation would be "CP".

Finalized Names#

Name

Explanation

Duefoglie

A literal translation of Two (Due) and Leaves (Foglie). A very nice-sounding name, it evokes the image of "twin".

Sabbiafine

It is a direct translation of Sand (Sabbia) and Fine (Beautiful/Delicate/Smooth). It sounds very nice and evokes the image of a beautiful sandy town.

Giardinfiorito

A literal translation of "Garden" (Giardino) and "Blossoming/Blooming" (Fiorito). It evokes the image of a beautiful flower field.

Flemminia

It is a direct translation of Flemma (Coolness, phlegm, calm) + the suffix "inia" (a suffix added to town names). We think "Flemminia" fits the image of "carefree" and "idyllic".

Memoride

It is a small town that preserves the history and old ways of life of Sinnoh, so we named it Memoride:
A name made up of Memory (Memoria) and "ide" (a suffix added to town names).

Giubilopoli

Literal translation.

Canalipoli

A name made up of Canale (Canal/irrigation channel) and the suffix Poli (city).

Mineropoli

A name made up of Minerario (Mining) and the suffix Poli (City).

Evopoli

A name made up of Evo (age, long period of time) and the suffix Poli (city). It evokes an old town with fading, almost forgotten remnants of antiquity.

Cuoripoli

A name made up of Cuore (Heart) and the suffix Poli (City). In Italian culture, "Hearth" symbolizes comfort and tolerance.

Pratopoli

A name made up of Prato (Field) and the suffix Poli (City). It brings to mind a town surrounded by grasslands.

Rupepoli

A name made up of Rupe (Steep rock) and the suffix Poli (City). It brings to mind a town built on the rugged, steep mountains.

Arenipoli

A name made up of Rena[*] (Sand) and the suffix Poli (City). It brings to mind a beautiful seaside town.

Nevepoli

A name made up of Neve (Snow) and the suffix Poli (City). It gives the impression of a town covered in snow.
Due to space constraints, the "point" part was omitted.
If it were added, the name for this town wouldn't fit within the 16-character limit.

Via Frangimare

It has been changed to "Via" + "Frangimare" (Seabreak).

Area Sfida

A literal translation of Challenge (Sfida). The literal translation, Area Lotta, is already taken in Emerald, so it could not be used.

Area Provviste

A literal translation of Cater (Provviste) + Area. We didn't use the literal translation, Area Sopravvivenza, because it was too long. Trainers can train in this area, so we think this name is appropriate.
→Is it possible to use a place name that means something like "a place to prepare"?
→ The verb "provvedere" means "to prepare something", so "Area Provviste" perfectly conveys the image of a "place to prepare".

Monte Ostile

Literal translation.
→In the dictionary we have, "OSTILE" means "hostile".
"Hostile Mountain" has a slightly different image. Please use a name that conveys "harsh, rugged mountain".
→ In this case, "Ostile" does not give the impression of "Animosity". We think it definitely gives the impression of a "harsh mountain".
[Stark Mountain is known as "Hard Mountain" (ハードマウンテン) in Japanese.]

Spazio Origine

A direct translation of Origin (Origine) and Space (Spazio).
In-game it appears to be an open space, but using Hall (Sala) in Italian suggests a closed space, so it doesn't quite fit.

Zona Lotta

The name has been changed to "Zona Lotta" (Battle Zone) to better suit the in-game appearance

PokéKron SpA

Pokétch is very difficult to pronounce in Italian. Pokéwatch would exceed the character limit, so we came up with the following name:
A combination of Poké and Kronos (ancient Greek for time). In Italian, the prefix Crono evokes time. It's easy to pronounce and a very suitable name.

Sc. Allenatori

We changed the abbreviation from "S. Allenatori" to "Sc. Allenatori" because it is clearer, and there is enough available.

Negozio Bici di Gigi Manubrio

The only translation that fits within the character limit is "Bike Shop" (which is already used in Pokémon Gold and Silver), so we have to use that same translation.
"Rad Rickshaw" is translated as "Gigi Manubrio". "Gigi" is a typical Italian nickname, and "Manubrio" refers to the handlebars of a bicycle.

Edificio Culture

A literal translation of Cultural (Culturale) and Place (Luogo). It evokes an international location.

Arena Virtù

The text file is labeled Arena delle Virtù (old term), but in the Areaname file it must be shortened to Arena Virtù due to space limitations.

C. C. Rupepoli

The text file is labeled Centro Commerciale (old term), but in the Areaname file it must be shortened to C. C. Rupepoli due to space limitations.

Faro Panorama

In Italian, "Outlook/Vista" means "view", so we used "Panorama". There are binoculars on top of the lighthouse, so we think it's appropriate.

Terra Lontana

We changed the translation to be more literal: "Terra" (Land) and "Lontana" (Far-away/Distant).

Categories (分類)#

Early Name

Final Name

Explanation

Reason for Rejection

Ovolone

Ovettino

It's similar, but not the same as "Big egg". Due to character limitations, we couldn't use a literal translation (Casa delle bambole), or a similar term (Casagioco) due to legal issues.
"Ovolone" comes from the suffix "Uovo" and "one" meaning "Big." It also has an image of cuteness. The literal translation of "Play House" (Mamma Casetta) would be too long. Since this category references Happiny, we thought "Ovolone" could be a good alternative.

Since Chansey is the "Egg ("Uovo") Pokémon, it would be odd for its pre-evolution to be "Big Egg" ("Ovolone").
If you use "egg", be sure to add a word like "small".

Rupestre

Grotta

Literal translation.

It was already approved, but was changed after a suggestion from an Italian tester.

Scorpirello

Scorpidente

Scorpio + pipistrello (bat).

Please use "scorpion + fangs" instead of "scorpion + bat".

Reminiscent of "Earth" (Terra).

Vulcano

The name of the god of fire in Roman mythology.
He uses Fire-type Pokémon, so it's a very fitting name.
→It's OK to use a name from mythology as is as long as it doesn't cause any religious issues.
→It's from ancient myths, so we don't think it will cause any religious issues.

Luciano

Reminiscent of "Lucid" (Lucido). It is also a real name.

Camilla

It's an elegant and refined name that evokes Chamomile (Camomilla), the herb many Italian women use to dye their hair blonde. It is also a real name.

Martes

Literal translation. The "s" at the end makes it sound more feminine.

Giovia

A name based on Giove (Jupiter).
We chose a name that sounds more feminine.

Demetra

In Greek mythology, she is the goddess of grain (cereals), so this name is reminiscent of grain.
→By using the name of this goddess, wouldn't it give the impression that Cheryl is the leader of Mira, Riley, Marley, and Buck?
If not, then it's OK.
→We don't think this name gives the impression that she is a leader.

Matilde

It's a name that evokes Barley (Malto). It's also a real name.

Strascico

Scoppio

Literal translation of after-effect, aftermath.

Please choose a name that conveys the nuance of "explosion" or "bursting".

Spavalderia

Nervisaldi

Literal translation of Defiance and Cockiness.

Rather than "bold resistance" or "impertinence", it would be preferable to use words that fit the image of "unwavering mental strength and courage".
