This page details development materials of Hamsterball (Windows).

On September 5th, 2019, John Raptis, the developer of Hamsterball gave the community a zip file containing many 3D models, as well as a couple exporters used to convert the .3ds files to .MESH and .MESHWORLD files that the game uses.

Unused Models#

Mouse#

High res

Low res

Two models of a mouse; one high res, and one low res with coloring on the nose and the eyes. This was originally another selectable playable character until John realized that the name was Hamsterball.

Pool Rack#

PoolRack

PoolRack(small)

triangle

There are two models for a pool rack in the Source Meshes folder called "PoolRack(Small).max" and "PoolRack.max" these were intended to be used for a cut mode named "Gerbilliards" which it was cut due to performance issues with the lowest end requirements. Additionally, there is a subfolder called "Rack" where there are 2 textures, a 3DS file, and a "triangle.max" file. The two textures are used for the triangle.max file, and the other two models use textures called "wood.png" and "lightwood.jpg" that do not exist and likely removed after Gerbilliards was cut. The renders below use the two textures that are in the "Rack" folder for the PoolRack models as placeholders.

Eye#

A plain sphere that is supposed to have a texture of a eye but it is missing.

Cannon#

Inside the folder for Sky Race (named "Spaghetti") are a few 3D models for a cannon attached to a balloon. "Cannon.max" is the main one, and there are 2 others which just have either the cannon or balloon part. It is unknown what the cannon would shoot at the player.

Changed Models#

Chrome Ball#

Early

Final

"BeeBee"_hamsterball_model.png

The model "BeeBee.max" contains a sphere with the Chrome.png texture applied to it. It seems like originally the chrome balls were going to be 3D, but they were later changed to just be a billboarded texture to prevent performance issues. Since the original texture file was changed to show the final billboarded texture, the 3D model does not look correct.

Fan#

Early

Final

The file "Fan.fbx" contains an early version of the fan seen in Expert Race. The final model is named "Fan-Cut.max". There are several things different about the early model compared to the final:

  • It is not colored.
  • It has more polygons on the front than the final.
  • It does not have any details on the pole.
  • There is no button on it

Early Race Names#

Some of the folders in the archive have different names than the levels they represent. Here is a table of all the levels that have different names in the final game.
