Inspired by the e-Reader and something of a precursor to things like amiibo and the Toys-To-Life genre, Mattel's HyperScan leaned heavily on the gimmick of unlocking content and gaining in-game items from scanning game-specific trading cards. The HyperScan was really prone to have parts break over time, making working consoles rare to find.
It crashed and burned spectacularly, and was discontinued less than a year after launch with just five games released (well, technically three-and-a-half since half the cards for X-Men and Interstellar Wrestling League never reached shelves).
