Specifically:

  • What causes this to happen?
  • What determines the destination stages? Are they simply the stages placed next in the game's memory?
  • Why does performing the glitch against Metal Man crash the game, and is it anything to do with the MM1 leftovers?
  • Is there any way at all to make this glitch work on PAL versions?

It is possible to glitch into certain stages from robot master arenas. To do so, lag the game by spamming either Item-1 or Bubble Lead while jumping at the entrance. With either luck or good timing, several tiles on the right wall will disappear in sequence (as though they were a second boss door) and you will be taken to a different stage.

The stage you're taken to depends on the boss arena in which the glitch is performed:

Arena

Destination Stage

Crash Man

Introduction Screen

Heat Man

Wily Stage 1

Air Man

Wily Stage 2

Wood Man

Wily Stage 3

Bubble Man

Wily Stage 4

Quick Man

Wily Stage 5

Flash Man

Wily Stage 6

Metal Man

Game Crash

The destination stage's graphics will be rendered using the tileset from the robot master's stage (e.g. Wily Stage 1 will use Heat Man's stage graphics), which can make things hard to parse. In addition, the boss fight will not end just because you're on a different screen - the boss music will continue and attacks will still target you. Dying by any means will end the boss fight, respawning you in the destination stage with the robot master's stage music.

It is not possible to beat any of the destination stages, as while their regular enemies will spawn as normal, their bosses will not. Losing all your lives (continuing will put you back at the beginning of the robot master's stage) or resetting the console are the only ways out.

This glitch is not known to work on PAL versions of the game, likely due to their lower framerate causing less lag.
