Collision detection issues#

The collision detection for a car tests two circles (one at the front, one at the rear) to simulate their ellipsoid shape. As the circles do not overlap, it is possible to slide sideways into walls (especially manually placed ones or those ending in a sharp exterior angle) or through objects without touching them.

Driving into a corner ending in a sharp interior angle at high speed can get the car stuck in one of the walls. Kicking other cars into a wall is especially easy here.

Almost all ceilings which were deemed unreachable under normal gameplay are not solid and can be jumped or fallen through. These can be reached by consecutively placing walls and jumping onto them. Note that walls placed on raised or lowered platforms cannot be jumped on.

Out of bounds oddities#

Escaping the maze and driving away too far causes the minimap to draw glitchy lines.

The collision detection only properly works inside a limited range. Exceeding it causes the following bugs:

  • Negative X axis: An invisible wall is hit, and the car is pushed back closer to the maze.
  • Positive X axis: Collisions (with cars and manually placed walls) are not detected. Coordinates eventually wrap over onto the other side of the maze.
  • Y axis: Crashes the game. Would also happen if a green robot car checks whether it can see the player in this region.
  • Positive A (Z / height) axis: Manually placed walls are rendered improperly. Eventually, an invisible ceiling is hit.
