The Astyanax

The Astyanax tells the mighty story of a brave, blonde guy named Roche, who (along with his black-haired, nameless twin brother) receives a divine revelation from God and is granted the mythical Fire Axe. With this powerful weapon, Roche embarks on a perilous journey to the Castle of Algerine, where he must defeat the demon overlord Argos, end a long ugly battle, and restore peace to a world long ruled by demons. Of course, this is easier said than done.

It's also Aicom's true FIRST major hit in the arcades, and the sole Jaleco game developed by them that it's worth playing.

Very Loud Samples#

No, this is not some weird emulation bug, The Astyanax's drums really are that loud.

Warning: Turn down your volume!

Isolated Samples (astyan7 - 10)

In-Game Music (real hardware)

For some reason, The Astyanax's ADPCM audio has its samples formatted with a very high volume. These can be heard in the game's music as a distorted drumline, as these hissy, almost industrial-sounding crashes were intended to be percussive samples. This might have been caused by improper digitization, as one sample in astyan10 (heard in 0:29) is properly formatted with the right volume.
