Terrifying 9.11

In what's likely the most appalling...thing on the Game Boy, Terrifying 9.11 uses actual video footage of the September 11, 2001 attacks on its title screen set to an equally ill-fitting ditty. On top of all this, the game even greets you with a brief standoff between George W. Bush and Bin Laden.

Extremely tasteless shock value aside, the game itself is a (surprisingly high-quality) port of Metal Slug. Terrifying 9.11 was known to be quite rare among bootleg circles, especially since the game was undumped until 2015 and 2017 (in Chinese and English respectively).

Unused Graphics#

To do:
There're apparently more. Also, are there leftover code for them that can be restored in ROM?

  • Language select menu located at $9C000. In the final game, the language seems to be hardcoded in ROM.
  • A "How To Play" screen that seems to originate from the arcade game, with sprites for the controller buttons. Located at $A9000 and $B1000.

A(n also surprisingly high-quality) recreation of the original Metal Slug title screen located at $A8000, with added copyright info. This would suggest that the game was meant to be straightforwardly released as Metal Slug at some point, prior to its utterly tasteless rebrand.

Li Cheng rerelease#

To do:

  • Compare the credits in the original Chinese version and the Li Cheng version when the original version is dumped.
  • In addition, the Hitek logo is intact in Li Cheng re-release, located at $19A000.

A company called Li Cheng re-released the Chinese version of the game in Mainland China, titled Te Shu Bu Dui 2: Ji Di. In this version, the Hitek logo in the intro was replaced with a duplicate of the title screen tilemap.

Also, the developer names in the credits are replaced with pseudonyms.
