Rolypolys no Nanakorobi Yaoki

Rolypolys' Seven-Downs Eight-Ups is a children's edutainment game by the people behind titles such as Eastern Mind: The Lost Souls of Tong-Nou and LSD: Dream Emulator.

It gets as weird as you would expect.

Intro Assets#

Alternate OutSide Intro#

RolyPolys1_LOGO.MP4

Present in the game's directory are two intro videos for OutSide. One, remixed from Eastern Mind, is used. This version, copied from Chu-teng (the sequel to Eastern Mind), is not.

Early Shinko Logo Sound#

sinko logo is an early sound for Shinko's logo that uses the same synthesizer as the final file (ShinkoLogoNew).

Shooting Game#

This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically:

  • Is the alternate mode actually used, and the method for triggering it is just very obscure?

In the shooting game from the letter A, the player must move the cursor and click to shoot a virtual Cho who flies around the screen.

Japanese Text#

A handwritten message occupying slot 61. "マウスで連打するんだ!" translates to "Hit repeatedly with the mouse!"

Alternate Mode#

CactusEpilepsy.gif

The following content may induce seizures and has been hidden by default. Click to reveal:

Frames exist that suggest, in an earlier or alternate mode, Cho would stay in the center of the screen while the player had to time clicking when the reticle was in the middle. The firing animation for this is used if the player wastes 100 shots.

Split Bullet#

At the end of the file, there are frames for a bullet being shot, which then splits to travel past two virtual Chos that are jumping on either side of the screen.

Letter Titles#

F Walking#

The letter F falling and walking with four legs. This animation is presumably used for when Fire was originally "Foot".

Early Fire title#

The aforementioned early title image for Fire, where it's instead called "Foot".

Early Eyes title#

An early title image for the letter E, where it's instead called "Earned".

Earned Alphabet#

The entire alphabet. Another version of this exists with every letter separated.

Highlighted E#

A cropped image of the alphabet with a glowing "E".

V variants#

A whopping 24 variants of the letter V, all of which go unused. It's not clear what these would have been used for.

Leftovers#

Flipped Bu Animation#

A flipped version of the walking animation for Bu exists in both the explanations for U and V. This sprite originated from the short movie for "Ventured".
