Pyokotan no Dai Meiro (Pyokotan's Large Maze) is a game that basically plays as a series of minigames that must be beaten to advance to the next stage. Naturally, the minigames get more difficult as the game goes on. There's really not much to this game, probably because it was targeted toward a younger audience. Being a late release on the Famicom towards the end of its lifespan, it's naturally sought after by collectors.
This game also makes the worst use of Sunsoft's beloved sound engine, resembling something on a Sega Pico rather than some of the more well-known Sunsoft games.
Debug Mode#
A disabled debug mode can be re-enabled using the Game Genie code ZEEIVAPA and starting the game. Press Left and Right to select the level you start in, while pressing Start selects it. Press Up and Down to select the minigame you start in, while pressing A selects it.
Due to the cursor being colored the same palette as the background palette, it's invisible on-screen, although you can still move it around with D-pad. You can re-color the cursor to make it visible.
The debug menu also shows a build date dated at 1992/12/20 01:10:20.
CHR Viewer#
In the debug mode, press Select to enter a CHR viewer.
- Up and Down scrolls through the CHR banks.
- Left and Right moves the tiles on the screen.
- B, when held, flips the tiles.
- Start cycles through various palettes.
- Select displays an unused screen depicting Pyokotan, before returning to the title screen.
