Pop'n music 5 (PlayStation)

pop'n music 5 (PlayStation) pop'n music 5 was the fifth port of the series to the PlayStation, and the first to not require an additional game to load since pop'n music 2. It had plenty of new songs and even previews from the next game, but it was also when the limitations of the PlayStation hardware started to become more evident. It has also gained notoriety for its strict song unlocking requirements.

MOE

The character of First step. Her sprite sheet (0x54C000) has many unused palettes; some of them are seemingly early versions of the 2P palette with slightly different colors, while some others don't resemble anything seen here or even in future games in which she appears.

The character of Sweaty Guys. His sprite sheet (0x573000) contains two earlier palettes for his LOSE animation which don't apply an orange tint to the characters. This lack of tinting also reveals some lighting in the clouds.

Portraits#

MOE

Oddly, the palettes for her character sprites are also stored in her portrait file (0x1239800). There's also an additional palette which could be meant for an earlier version of the 1P portrait.

Popn5PS-moeU.png
GRAPPA

GRAPPA's character portrait (0x124B000) has a variation of the 2P palette which tints his mustache pink and the inner part of his suit white. Incidentally, his 2P sprites in this port have these traits due to graphic limitations.

Unused Splash Graphics#

At 0xC56800 is a title card for a HYPER chart for the song Escapes from your love, but it doesn't have one.

Arcade Leftover#

The package containing the title screen graphics (0x1351000) has a leftover from the original Arcade release, from when it was still undergoing location tests. The palette was reduced to accommodate the 16-color limit, though.

Dummy File#

The extensionless Z_DUMMY, when read as signed 16-bit PCM audio, reveals itself to be the long version of the track Life, a song which was playable in the very first pop'n music home release.
