Super Puyo Puyo#
|
|
To do:
|
As mentioned before, Kirby's Avalanche is a western localization of the Japanese Super Famicom game Super Puyo Puyo which is a home version of Sega's arcade game Puyo Puyo.
Due to being a reskin of Super Puyo Puyo, Kirby's Avalanche had no Japanese release, the only game in the franchise with this distinction (unless you wanna count Kirby Slide, I guess).

Story Mode / Competition#
|
|
'...But what does it mean?' |
"Story Mode" in Super Puyo Puyo is re-named to "Competition" in Kirby's Avalanche. The story in Super Puyo Puyo follows Arle Nadja who sets off to defeat Satan after learning the spell "Owanimo" that converts groups of four colored creatures into energy. Meanwhile Kirby's Avalanche takes place in Dream Land where the puzzle game "Avalanche" is a local pastime of Dream Landers. Kirby decides to hold a country-wide competition to determine who is the best player.

The "Cast" text in Super Puyo Puyo is skipped in Kirby's Avalanche along with the Carbuncle credit.
Music#
The music was completely redone for Kirby's Avalanche. Several music tracks are remixes of ones from Kirby's Adventure and Kirby's Dream Course.
The 2 player "competition mode" music in Super Puyo Puyo uses Toy of Puyo Puyo but was changed in Kirby's Avalanche to a remix of Ice Cream Island. The remix is also used in the cast credits which was originally Ondo of Puyo Puyo in Super Puyo Puyo. The introduction cutscenes for the lesson stages uses different music that does not have an equivalent in Super Puyo Puyo which uses Memories of Puyo Puyo instead.

The European and Australian version was released as Kirby's Ghost Trap, with the localization recontextualizing the Garbage Puyos (called boulders in Avalanche) as ghosts due to their transparent appearance. The regular Puyos are called Blobs regardless of which version.
Despite these changes, it seems the localizers kept the writing on the repeating stone column background (the background itself was carried over and slightly modified from its source game), as it still inexplicably says "PUYOPYO".

Text Overflow#
The change from "Avalanche" to "Ghost Trap" caused a minor text overflow in Squishy's stage, as the dialogue box was not widened and/or the text not rearranged to accommodate the longer name.
