Jordan vs Bird (Genesis)

To do:
Rip sprites of Bing Gordon and Ron Barr due to that they have an animation.

Jordan vs Bird is a remake of a Commodore 64 basketball game where you play as either Michael Jordan or Larry Bird.

Regional Differences#

When the game was brought to Japan, some changes were made due to a lawsuit from ESPN over the game's EA Sports Network (EASN) branding and EA had to change their branding to EA Sports.

In the Japanese version, the EASN logo was replaced by the EA Sports logo.

The EASN logo was changed to the EA Sports logo even though the text still says Electronic Arts Sports Network and Press Start to Begin was changed to Push Start to Begin.

A brighter blue has been used in the background and the EASN logo was replaced by the EA Sports logo. In the US/Europe version, 2 Players is the default setting while in the Japanese version, it has changed to 1 Player Jordan. There were some minor text changes:

The Japanese version also changes the option for 2 Players. They are now 2 PLAYER 1-J 2-B and 2 PLAYER 1-B 2-J rather than just Player 1 being Jordan and Player 2 being Bird.

Matchup Screen#

Japan

Commentator Bing Gordon has been replaced by Ron Barr in the Japanese version. The text was altered by replacing the EASN references with EA Sports. Interestingly, a larger portrait of Bing Gordon still appears during gameplay in the Japanese version whenever an instant replay is called by the game.

Results Screen#

US/Europe

Japan

The results screen is shown on completion of any game mode or during half time in the One on One mode. In the Japanese version the EASN logo in the top left corner is swapped for an EA Sports logo. A slightly different portrait of Larry Bird is also used, despite the original portrait being shown unchanged on the title screen.

One on One#

US/Europe

Japan

In the original version of the game, a small window of a referee blowing a whistle is shown before the gameplay starts in One on One mode. In the Japanese version this is missing, with gameplay starting immediately after the screen is rendered. The referee is otherwise intact, appearing as usual to call fouls or notify when the time is out.

Three Point Contest#

US/Europe

Japan

The Three Point Contest mode consists of five screens showing Larry Bird throwing basketballs from different angles. In each of them courtside signs carrying the EASN logo are replaced with EA Sports signs in the Japanese version.

Slam Dunk Contest#

Japan

In addition to replacing the EASN sign with an EA Sports one, the Japanese version of the game appears to replace several signs completely, reusing signs from the first screen of the Three Point Contest game mode.
