In the Hunt is a unique horizontal scrolling shooter where you control a submarine on a mission to stop a deadly doomsday device from being unleashed upon the world by an evil organization. The game stood out among most shooters at the time in that you could scroll the screen at your own pace.

In the Japanese version, D.A.S. (the name of the evil organization) stands for "Destroy and Slaughter". The international versions changed it to "Dark Anarchy Society".
