Dig Dug II (NES, Famicom Disk System)

Dig Dug II is not so much digging this time as it is cutting away...

Hidden Credits#

Developer Initials#

This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: Determine who these initials belong to.

The below string is present in all versions, and is used by the game to check if a hard or soft reset was performed:

K.N.

It appears to be initials for one of the developers.

A hidden copyright string is present in all versions.

Japan, US, Virtual Console, Namco Museum Archives

Famicom Disk System

COPYRIGHT 1982 1986 NAMCO LTD. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
COPYRIGHT 1982 1990 NAMCO LTD. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED

The FDS version contains the same updated copyright year as the title screen.

Level Select#

After the title screen is in place, press Start + Select + A at the same time (this may take a few tries).

The level select can also be accessed by holding Right when starting a game after a game over, though the level selection only goes up to the level where the game over occurred (thus making this a continue feature) when accessed this way.

The level select and both of its activation methods were removed from the FDS version.

Infinite Lives#

Use the Level Select cheat to reach Level 15. Kill a single Pooka so your score reads 200 points (don't kill any Fygars, they give 400 points!). Lose all of your lives and at the game over screen, press B on Controller 2 and A on Controller 1 at the same time. Now start your game again and your lives will read "HERANAI" (減らない, "won't go down").

The code for this still exists and works in the FDS version, though the removal of the level select makes it impossible to activate via legitimate means.

Regional Differences#

Title Screen#

Quite a few title screen variants here.

Japan (Famicom)

Japan (FDS)

US

Virtual Console

Namco Museum Archives

The Japanese title screen features the original NAMCOT logo, along with the standard copyright info. The FDS version updates the copyright year, and replaces player 2's score with the round display to match the in-game status bar.

The US title screen removes the NAMCOT logo, replacing it with the copyright info, plus a trademark signifier and further info on Bandai and Nintendo of America's licensing. The Virtual Console version removes the licensing text.

The version in Namco Museum Archives Vol. 2 uses the Japanese NAMCOT logo, and updates the copyright info to refer to Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc. instead.
