To do:

  • add content.
  • Expand on the intro.
  • add No regret exclusive command line arguments.
  • add information of unused maps.

Crusader: No Regret is an isometric action shooter with tank controls taking place in a future dystopia, and a sequel to Crusader: No Remorse,

As with its predecessor, No Regret was built on the same engine as Ultima VIII: Pagan with many upgrades, such as FMV cutscenes and music playback being done through MOD trackers instead of classical MIDI.

Cheat Mode#

Either start the game with parameter -laurie to enter the soft cheat mode or during gameplay enter LOOSECANNON16 to enable the full cheat mode.

Key(s)

Action

Availability

~

Toggle cheats between the Soft and Full state. Only if jassica16 was entered previously or the game was started with -laurie

Soft

Ctrl + F10

Toggle immortality for the currently controlled player or NPC. In DOSBox press F10 first and then Ctrl to avoid triggering the built-in mouse capture command.

Full

F10

Get all weapons and items, plus recharge the energy. Resurrects the Silencer from most death states except for drowning in acid and falling off pits.

Full

Ctrl + L

Show current coordinates.

Always

Ctrl + Q

CD transfer display toggle.

Soft

Ctrl + V

Display internal stats (version number, memory stats, etc.).

Always

F7

Draws coarse "3 x 3" camera-aligned world-cell grid.

Soft

Alt + F7

Draws a snap/trigger coverage overlay grid.

Soft

Ctrl + F7

Draws egg-hatcher trigger diamonds. Visualizes live Egg hatcher processes. DOSBox AVI capture keybinding might prevent the command from activating.

Soft

F

See object framework.

Soft

H

Toggle the Hack Mover: Move objects around by holding ⇧ Shift to click and drag a desired object.

Soft

JASSICA16

Shows the message "Of course we changed the cheats... duh" and teleports the player to a map surrounded by several instances of the final boss while a techno version of Christmas music plays. If the player manages to survive, the game closes down.

Various notes:

  • Immortality is toggled for the currently controlled NPC. This means you could potentially make a mech immortal and it will remain in that state even after relinquishing control.
  • "Immortality" is a slight misnomer, as it actually doesn't entirely negate damage but instead divides damage by 262,144. Those with "immortality" can still die, but it'll take a very long time to do so.
  • Entering teleporters and elevators will disable immortality and it needs to be reapplied. This is because the state is not automatically restored in the entity initializer.
  • The immortality message does not have the input buffering guards that other commands have. This means that it will keep toggling itself on and off multiple times in a row depending on how long the buttons have been pressed.

Command Line Arguments#

When booting up the game at the command prompt, you can use these command line arguments to enable a variety of effects.

Argument

Description

-?

Prints "You DO need help!" to the console and doesn't do anything else.

-debug

Is recognized as a command but doesn't produce any immediate effects.

-setver

Overrides the version strings.

-asylum

Prints "Enabling ENHANCED mode. (NOT!)" and doesn't do anything else.

-warp () () ()

Warps to the specified mission number. It accepts optional x y z parameters to place the Silencer at the specified location. The coordinates are ignored if -egg is specified. Valid mission numbers go from 1 to 15, 0 is accepted for the map offset function.

-mapoff

Adds the specified map offset to the warp command. For instance -warp 0 -map0ff 40 would load map 40. This allows loading into any map in the game. Has no effect if -warp is not used.

-egg

Sets the destination egg override used by the warp command. "egg" is what the engine calls marker objects that serve various functions, in this case only "Teleport Destination" eggs are taken into consideration. When the value is nonnegative, it takes precedence over the direct-coordinate teleport command. Usually 250 leads to the weapons room, a normally unused room present in every level containing weapons and a teleporter that leads to the beginning of the level.

-laurie

Enables Soft cheat mode. Debug visualizers like F7, Ctrl+F7, ALT+F7, F and Ctrl+Q become available. It becomes possible to press ~ to enable Full cheat mode.

-u

Usecode override. It expects a DOS path to a folder (8 character limit for names) containing the replacement usecode named EUSECODE.FLX like the original. The game will load the new usecode in place of the original.

-demo

Enables Demo Mode, changes the way the intro movie is played.

Debug Command#

When starting the game with the "-debug" command parameter the text "Debugging mode ON." will be printed before the game starts. Unlike No Remorse, there is no visible AVI debug overlay.

Unused Maps#

Map IDs go from 1 to 255 but not all slots are filled with maps.

This table is used internally by the game when the -warp command is used to determine which map to send the player to. Interestingly, the table in No Regret is exactly the same as the one in No Remorse. It is useful to understand which maps are unused in the final game.

Here's a work in progress list of unused maps, plus a list of arguments for warping to the map at the right coordinates:

26

This map is a copy of the rebel base from map 25 and 27. The keypad near the entrance allows accessing a "Video Player" while talking to the rebels allows using a "cheaters menu"

-warp 0 16383 16639 0 -mapoff 26

Crusader_No_Regret_Video_Player_Menu.png Crusader_No_Regret_Cheater_Menu.png

30

Early unused version of the map from mission 3.

-warp 0 -mapoff 30 -egg 206

39

Unused early version of the map from mission 2. It's pretty clearly unfinished: the first few rooms have NPCs in them but a lot of corridors are empty, Floor 2 has a few NPCs but many objects are missing and several are out of place, Floor 4 has no NPCs at all and is missing most of the objects, and the area accessible through egg 4 has no NPCs or objects at all.

-warp 0 28847 13071 96 -mapoff 39

44

The first thing that can be seen is the game's director Tony Zurovec pointing at the camera. After walking a few steps a sound clip plays: "I think I'm gonna fart". The map is small and contains three buttons: the first one when activated enables a series of lasers that spell "THUMPER WUZ HEAR". The second button makes lasers appear and spell "E---", the nickname of Eric Willmar, one of the developers (his signature appears often hidden within the game). The final button shows the text "HI JELY TIMMY DIANE TRACY" (Jely being Jason Ely, one of the game system programmers). The final cluster of lasers cannot be activated, but by examining the spawned shapes it reads "HI NIMAH LOVE YA".

-warp 0 -mapoff 44 -egg 250

100

Unused early copy of one of the maps from the final mission.

-warp 0 -mapoff 100 -egg 25

200

Unused early copy of the map from mission 3, at a different completion stage than map 201.

-warp 0 -mapoff 200 -egg 30

201

Unused early copy of the map from mission 3. It looks complete, but there are various weird quirks like the Silencer being able to walk while using the first remote view console.

-warp 0 -mapoff 201 -egg 30

215

Unused early copy of the map from mission 2.

-warp 0 -mapoff 215 -egg 30

224

Unused map using the final level tileset.

-warp 0 -mapoff 224 -egg 30

230

The map the player is warped to when entering the JASSICA16 cheat code. Contains eight copies of the final boss that immediately attack the Silencer. Christmas music plays in the background.

-warp 0 -mapoff 230 -egg 30

248

Unused map that contains a series of three unconnected rooms with static NPC shapes in them.

-warp 0 16895 17151 0 -mapoff 248

249

Unused test map for NPCs in various poses, mostly kneeling ones.

-warp 0 16895 16383 0 -mapoff 249

250

Unused test map for NPCs. Has all sorts of NPCs in a row with buttons to spawn them.

-warp 0 16383 16127 0 -mapoff 250

254

Unused test map filled with explosives and NPCs.

-warp 0 2815 3071 0 -mapoff 254
