This is a sub-page of Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars.
Unused Units#
Steel Talons#
Despite havi
- Despite having no buildable Zone Troopers, a variant called SteelTalonsZoneTrooper can still be found in the World Builder.
- Despite APCs being replaced by Mobile Repair Transports, a variant called SteelTalonsAPC can still be found in the World Builder.
- Despite Pitbulls being replaced by Wolverines, a variant called SteelTalonsPitbull can still be found in the World Builder.
- Despite Predators being replaced by Titans, a variant called SteelTalonsPredator can still be found in the World Builder.
- Despite having no buildable Shatterer, a Zone Shatterer variant called SteelTalonsImprovedSonicTank can still be found in the World Builder.
ZOCOM#
- Despite having access to regular APCs only, a variant called ZOCOMRepairAPC can still be found in the World Builder.
- Despite having no buildable Juggernauts, a variant called ZOCOMJuggernaught can still be found in the World Builder.
- Despite Shatterers being replaced by Zone Shatterer, a variant called ZOCOMSonicTank can be found in the World Builder.
Harbinger#
While the Redeemer is referred to as NODMetaUnit in the files, there is another unit that shares its name and tooltips: NODHarbinger:
Name:NODHarbingerWarmech
"Redeemer"
END
Type:NODHarbingerWarmech
"Superheavy Walker. Strong vs. Everything."
END
Desc:NODHarbingerWarmech
"Abilities: \n » Rage Generator \n \nInfantry can permanently garrison the Redeemer to upgrade its abilities \n Militant Squad » Gun Turret \n Militant Rocket Squad » Rocket Turret \n Black Hand » Flame Turret \n Saboteur » Self Repair \n \n Only one Redeemer may be deployed at a time"
END
From the code, it looks like this was basically an upscaled Avatar, used as an early test for the Redeemer. In fact, one of the Redeemer concepts show a screenshot of a huge Avatar in the right upper corner:

Unused Upgrades#
Fanatics#
Disguise#
Marked Of Kane Fanatics had at some point an upgrade/special power that made them look like Militants, as some leftovers reveal. Sounds event: NOD_Disguise_Upgrade
Redeemer#
Garrison Upgrade#
There is an unused sound event called NOD_Redeemer_GarrisonUpgrade. It reuses the Laser Capacitors sound effect, but it is unknown what purpose it served.
Perhaps at some point an upgrade was required before infantry could be sent into the Redeemer (and perhaps is used to be more similar to the way buildings are garrisoned).
MARV#
Garrison Upgrade#
There is an unused sound event called GDI_MARV_GarrisonUpgrade. It reuses the Laser Capacitors sound effect, but it is unknown what purpose it served.
Perhaps at some point an upgrade was required before infantry could be sent into the MARV (and perhaps is used to be more similar to the way buildings are garrisoned).
Eradicator Hexapod#
Garrison Upgrade#
There is an unused sound event called ALI_Eradicator_GarrisonUpgrade. It reuses the Advanced Articulators sound effect, but it is unknown what purpose it served.
Perhaps at some point an upgrade was required before infantry could be sent into the Eradicator (and perhaps is used to be more similar to the way buildings are garrisoned).
Button_Upgrade_WalkerDefense#
This upgrade icon is unused - it seems to relate to the Gunwalker, but no code or animations remain to explain its use.
Orca#
While the ZOCOM-Orca starts with a sonic cannon, this was an upgrade at one point as indicated by the leftovers: There is a audio event called GDI_Orca_EchoCannonUpgradePurchased and a fitting image called Button_Upgrade_EchoCannon and a bunch of related texts:
UpgradeName:OrcaEchoCannon
"Orca ECHO Cannon"
END
UpgradePrereq:OrcaEchoCannon
"Research at Tech Center"
END
UpgradeType:OrcaEchoCannon
"Weapon Upgrade"
END
UpgradeDesc:OrcaEchoCannon
"Upgrades the Orca's missile launcher with sonic shells \n Increases damage \n Creates a small sonic shockwave radiating out from the point of impact"
END
Name:PurchaseEchoCannon
"Orca ECHO Cannon Upgrade"
END
DESCRIPTION:PurchaseEchoCannon
"Upgrades all Orcas with ECHO Cannons \n Upgrades the Orca's missile launcher with sonic shells \n Increases damage \n Creates a small sonic shockwave radiating out from the point of impact \n \n Left-click to begin researching"
END
Unused Graphics#
Confessor Cabal#
In the Kane's Wrath files, an alternate version of the icon with a Nod logo can be found:

There is also another used icon that looks more like the vanilla Confessor icon. However, it has the upgraded weapon which is rather unusual for an icon.
Prodigy#
There is also a slightly different, unused icon for it:

Ravager#
Has an unused icon in the files:

Old Names#
Awakened#
These used to be called "Silent Ones".
Reclamator Hub#
While the final name is Reclamator Hub, there are also audio events for a Reclamation Hub, indicating an earlier name.

Geva_ReclaimatorHubComplete

Zone Raider#
Leftovers give their name as Improved Zone Trooper and show them side-by-side with regular Zone Troopers (todo: find old screenshot again).
Shatterer#
The unit file calls it GDISonicTank. It is unknown if that was its initial name (similar to Nods Flame Tank) or if they simply had not decided on a name.
MARV#
Even though its full name is given as "Mammoth Armored Reclamation Vehicle" in the Intelligence Database and the unit spotlight, the pre-mission cutscene and mission briefing for MARV Rising give the full name "Mammoth Armed Reclamation Vehicle".
Ravager#
Called Stalker in the files.

Tiberian Twilight contains a unused icon for this unitthat looks much closer to the regular engineer: Chances are they wanted to highlight the weapon, the old icon makes him look like he is just a better armored engineer. |

The Artpacks actually contain this old texture that matches the concept (see the different helmet):

Tiberian Twilight contains what appears to be an early icon with a very different house color placement and more cyan parts. This matches an early image of it also showing significantly more cyan areas on the gun than the final model:
Tiberian Twilight contains an unused icon for a unit called "GDIMegaUnitA". Sadly, there is no further information, but the icon "NODMegaUnit" shows an early Redeemer. Was this perhaps an early idea for the MARV? Four tracks, enough space for mini turrets, sonic guns on top…

The finale icon has a white smudge on the helmet. However, Tiberian Twilight has a different (likely earlier) version of the icon. Aside from some color differences, it shows a skull/face on the helmet and a Nod logo instead of the MoK one. |

Mantis |
Tiberian Twilight contains what appears to be an early icon for it with a different cockpit and missile launcher. |

Oddities#
Mantis#
The icon still shows visible missiles loaded in the turret, but the final model is missing them.
Wolverine#
The icon for the Wolverine in Kane's Wrath shows very thin guns that do not match the model:

Shatterer#
Alternate sounds called GDI_Shatterer_WeaponShockwaveUpgraded & GDI_SteelShatterer_WeaponShockwaveUpgraded exist and are used for heroic Shatterer. However, just like the regular firing sounds, these belong to the Sonic Emitter (but are unused in Tiberium Wars). The Zone Shatterer one is also used for the Overload Beam ability.
It's unknown if there was supposed to be an upgrade for the Shatterer (that might have been turned into the Zone Shatterer) or if the name has no deeper meaning.
Zone Raider#
Zone Raider initially had a similar weapon to the Shatterer and Sonic Emitter (hence the similar rifle design). Leftover particles for the weapon effect are still in the game.
Titan and Wolverine#
GDIs Titan and Wolverine have weird model names - while models are usually named after their unit name (ie GUPitbull_SKN.w3x), the Titan is named GUVehicleF_SKN.w3x and the Wolverine is named GUInfantryB_SKN.w3x. Not only is this odd because no other unit uses these naming schemes, but it also raised questions like "what are VehicleA - VehicleE?"
Tiberian Twilight uses a very similar naming scheme and is lacking entries both for VehicleF and InfantryB.
MARV#
The final icon does not match the final model as the texture for the treads is different and the house color on the front has a different location. The barrel also has some cyan spots that are missing from the final texture.

Original Mjolnir Strike#
The files refer to the special power as Mjölnir Strike and Thor's Hammer. The comments also make it sound like it was supposed to consist of multiple volleys of projectiles.

Prodigy#
The Prodigy is called Blink Mastermind in the files (named after the Blink Packs upgrade that allows Shock Trooper to teleport). Usually, sub-faction units in Kane's Wrath either take their code from their main faction unit and just replace the code for upgrades (like the Traveler-59 Gun walker) or - if they are a different enough to be considered a new unit - have their own separate file with no links to the main faction (like the Reaper-17 Shard walker). The Prodigy on the other hand is a unique sub-faction unit, yet it takes its code from an otherwise unused unit called AlienBlinkMastermind. Oddly enough, the AlienBlinkMastermind lacks the Blink ability but has Area Mind Control. Makes you wonder why they bothered with this instead of just adding everything to the Prodigy directly.
Global Conquest#
While campaign and GC are separate game modes in the retail version, it was initially planned to have the campaign take place on the GC map. Different versions of the map for the different acts are still left in the files.
Data Loss?#
|
|
Please elaborate. |
It seems the BreakAway Games might have had (multiple?) data loses before release as the trailers seem to show working features that were broken in the final game (animations and stuff).
Laser Fences#
Some basic text entries for Laser Fences as separate objects (not upgrades) exist. They are among the descriptions for special buildings used in Global Conquest/campaign, so changes are they were intended for that too. Note that the last couple of tooltips likely belong to a different building.
NAME:NodLaserFence
"Nod Laser Fence"
END
DESC:NodLaserFence
"Nod Laser Fence"
END
NAME:LaserFenceControlTower
"Laser Fence Control Tower"
END
DESC:LaserFenceControlTower
"Laser Fence Control Tower"
END
NAME:LaserFencePylon
"Laser Fence Pylon"
END
DESC:LaserFencePylon
"Laser Fence Pylon"
END
It should be noted that the unused wall models from Tiberium Wars have been removed in Kane's Wrath, but there is a red recolor of the Tiberium containment walls used in the Tiberium Wars campaign. Perhaps this was an early test for the Laser Fences, or perhaps the whole concept of Laser Fences was simply an early idea for the similarly named upgrade.
Revisional Differences#
It seems the Fanatic icon was changed between Tiberium Wars and Kane's Wrath, possibly to make it less controversial:
