Chuck Rock (Sega Master System, Game Gear)

Chuck Rock on the Master System and Game Gear is an odd conversion of Core Design's prehistoric platformer, sporting no music in-game, totally black backgrounds, and most sprites being squeezed to half their original width. The Game Gear version is also the game's only Japanese release.

Level Skip/Invincibility Cheats#

In the Master System version, turn on the console while holding Down + Right + 1 on the first Controller 1 and Down on Controller 2. It done correctly, Chuck becomes invincible and you can skip levels in-game by pressing 2 on Controller 2.

The same cheat exists in the Game Gear version, this time done by inputting the password 2FLAF.

Version Differences#

The first screen's logo reflects the version's publisher. The Master System has the Virgin Games logo while the Game Gear has the Sega logo. The Game Gear version also lacks the DESIGN LIMITED under the Core logo and the fancy Presents text.

Title Screen#

Master System

Game Gear

The Game Gear version has a shrunken title screen to match the screen resolution, with a ™ added to the top-right of the logo.

While the Master System version instantly starts the game when you press 1, the Game Gear version takes you to a menu screen that has the newly added password feature.

Password System#

The Master System version has the heart signifying your health amount at the top left, and your lives at the top right, while the Game Gear version has the heart at the bottom left, and lives at the top left.

Levels#

To do:
Elaborate on the level differences

The Master System's levels and zones are based on those seen in most other versions of the game, while the Game Gear's levels are different. The Game Gear version also lacks Level 2 (The Cave), so it goes to Water after completing The Jungle.

Ending & Credits#

The ending picture seen in other versions of the game, featuring Gary Gritter getting flattened by the T-Rex while Chuck reunites with Ophelia, is not present in the Game Gear version.

The most notable change made to Game Gear version's ending text is replacing the mention of GARY with T. REX, likely because of the lack of the ending picture depicting the crushing of Gary, so "T. REX IS CRUSHED!" probably refers to the T-Rex being defeated by Chuck.

Ian Mathias and Andy Green are also not listed in the Game Gear version, likely because of screen space.
