BreakQuest Mobileis the official J2ME port of the 2004Breakout'' cloneBreakQuest'', featuring a title screen logo of utmost beauty.

Unused Graphics#

splash2.png in the 128x160 versions (Sony Ericsson W300 and Samsung GT-C3050) is a logo screen that was supposed to be shown in the intro alongside the Ngames logo.

Uncompiled Source Code#

14 versions of this game are preserved. One of those, the Samsung GT-C3050 (128x160) version, has two Java source files left in the JAR archive by mistake: GameAppState.java.bak (65Kb) and Localization.java.bak (69Kb). Of note is that the latter has early text for the "about" screen, with Zed as the game's publisher (as opposed to Ngames) and with the audio credit for Pawel Kurylo that was dropped in the final game.

Thumbs.db Files#

While Thumbs.db (Microsoft Windows thumbnail cache archive) with compressed versions of the assets being left over in J2ME games by mistake is nothing new, this game might be a winner in quantity:

  • Nokia (208x208) version contains 3 Thumbs.db files: in the root folder, in /fonts and in /game/gfx.
  • Nokia 2700c (240x320) version contains 2 Thumbs.db files: in the root folder and in /fonts.
  • Nokia E61 (320x240) version contains 1 Thumbs.db file in the root folder.

That's 6 unique Thumbs.db files from this game alone.

Revisional Differences#

While most versions contain 9 MIDI songs arranged from the tracker modules from the original game, several versions of the game include an additional 10th song also from the original game, "Baked Beams". These versions are for the Nokia 3250 (176x208), Nokia N80 (352x416), Nokia 5800 (360x640), Sony Ericsson W300 (128x160) and Sony Ericsson K550 (176x220). The reason for its omission from other versions is not clear.

This needs some investigation.
