Global#

Proto

Final

An incredibly minor change. The pastel shading on the signpost is less pronounced.

Proto

Final

The proto goes for a more metallic look with its hard blocks, as opposed to the final's more stone textured ones.

Cave#

Proto

Final

Much like in Super Mario World, the common wooden post object would become bones in underground areas. This applies to both the flat and spiked variants of the object. The final game instead uses graphics which look much closer to its appearance in other tilesets.

Proto

Final

The multicolored crystals have different shading. While more detailed than the final, they appear less translucent.

Proto

Final

The decorative spores were originally mushrooms.

Additionally, the foreground sparkling effect is not used in any cave levels.

Snow#

Proto

Final

The slope tiles in this tileset had some very clear collision lines that were cleared up in the final.

Jungle#

The palette was overhauled for the final game. The grass was made a more lush green color in the final.

Proto

Final

The shading on the canopy was spruced up in the final game.

Proto

Final

There is more moss on the stone pillars in the final.

Marble Castle#

Proto

Final

YI Final MarbleCastlePal1Compare.png

While the final game has many different palettes for this tileset, the palette used in the prototype most closely resembles the one used in 1-8 in the final. Even then, the early palette is a much more uniform brown color when compared to the final.

Proto

Final

The top of wall ledges are much more rugged and rocky looking. It seems this was the basis for the appearance of the wall ledges in the final's Stone Castle tileset.

Proto

Final

The bottom-right corner of the circular window, not used in the final, was slightly touched up.

Proto

Final

Horizontal bricks have much heavier shading than the final.

Proto

Final

More cracked than it is in the final game. Interestingly enough, the strange "dark pillar" found in the final game is also here, left untouched in the final.

Proto

Final

The unused shadowed brick was also touched up, as the left side of it was cut off.

More minor changes to the shading on the pipes used in fortresses.

Flower Garden#

Proto

Final

The shading on this tileset, primarily used in World 1, was given a facelift.

The rocky cliffs were reshaded in the final.

Stone Castle#

While not used for any rooms in this build, an early version of the Stone Castle tileset can be found by changing the Layer 1 tileset. This tileset would later be used in the ys_rom_0_D prototype.
