This is a sub-page of Proto:Super Ghouls'n Ghosts (SNES).

This article is a work in progress.
...Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes.

A prototype of Super Ghouls'n Ghosts released on Hidden Palace on January 1, 2022. It looks to be a US prototype, as evident by the logo and copyright text, and appears to be earlier in development compared to the June 26, 1991 build.

Title Screen#

Final

This screen is vastly different in the prototype. The logo was totally redone for the final build, with the prototype sporting a bright purple gargoyle, red and fuzzier Super text, and the GHOULS'N GHOSTS having a more yellow flame pattern. There's also no ™.

Secondly, there's no choice between starting the game or the options menu, just the former.

The © CAPCOM 1991 was moved more to the right in the final build, while the Capcom USA copyright is more spaced out, with periods added between each letter of USA.

Lastly, LICENCED BY NINTENDO OF AMERICA.INC. was shortened to just LICENSED BY NINTENDO with the LICENCED typo fixed.

Stage Select#

SGGTitleProtoStageSelect.png

Pressing any direction on the D-Pad reveals a simple stage select. Pressing Up or Down determines the stage itself, and Left or Right determines the stage section (X-1 is the start, while X-2 is after the checkpoint). Even though there are only 4 stages in this build, you can select up to stage 8. Choosing stages 5-1 and 6-1 send you to stage 4-1, while 5-2, 6-2, 7, and 8-1 send you to 4-2. Meanwhile, 8-2 will start you on stage 1-2.

World Map#

June 26 Proto

Final

  • Stage 1 in the US Proto has a slightly different tree, an extra skull pillar, and a subtle difference to the right side.
  • Stage 2 has a bit more space between the ship and the corals.
  • Stage 3 is the major difference, the tree that would later be moved to Stage 5 is here, just without the sky from the June 26th, 1991 Proto and onwards. The towers from the final Stage 3 are here, just colored differently.
  • Stage 4 is mostly the same as the later builds.

Stage 2#

A notable difference to the second part of Stage 2 is early on with this rough looking area with a seam-ful change of water with no rock pillar to cover it, and a lot more Flying Killers.

The waterfall that acts as the exit door is two-tiered in the prototype. The exit also opens up from below like most other doors, rather than the water draining from above like in the final game.
