This article has a talk page!

This page details one or more prototype versions of Papers, Please.

This page is rather stubbly and could use some expansion.
Are you a bad enough dude to rescue this article?

To do:

  • Cover all the builds, including the three Flash-based earliest builds.
  • Sprite rips for all of them.

During development of Papers, Please, several early builds were released to the public, including three early builds done in Flash that predate Alpha 0.1.1. They can be found here (includes downloads for Alpha 0.1.1 and the two Beta builds).

General Differences Across Builds#

Arstotzka Passport#

Marginally-Functional Build

Alpha 0.1.1-Beta 0.5.5

Beta 0.5.13-Final

Perhaps the most notable difference in early development of the game is Arstotzka's emblem. Initially, it was just a large eagle portrayed in a relaxed ("close" in heraldic terms) stance. This version was first shown on the TIGSource forums on December 2, 2012, and lasted up until Beta 0.5.13, where it was changed to the final version.

The Arstotzkan passport went through two iterations with the early emblem, with Alpha 0.1.1's being more refined.

Flash-Based Builds#

There are three Flash-based builds, two "pointlessly-early" builds and one "marginally-functional" build.

Alpha 0.1.1#

Released on February 1, 2013, and the earliest downloadable build. This build contains only two days; day 1 is exactly like the final game's day 1, while day 2 is equivalent to the final game's day 4 (the day that introduces ID cards for citizens and entry permits for foreigners).

Graphical Differences#

Intro#

To do:
There's two placeholder graphics.

Proto

Final

The intro graphics are missing in this build, so placeholder graphics are used instead. This carries over to the Beta builds as well.

Beta 0.5.13#

Released on April 27, 2013, and the last public beta build. This build goes up to the final game's day 8.

This build can still be downloaded on Lucas Pope's website.

Proto

Final

The main menu has slight differences. "BETA" is present below the logo, there's a button that says "GET YOUR NAME FEATURED IN THIS GAME AS ONE OF THE IMMIGRANTS" (which, of course, doesn't work anymore), the "Created by Lucas Pope" text also features Pope's social media handle below it, and the only option is "PLAY", which leads into Story Mode.

Unused Immigrant Type#

There is an unused type of person in the code of the game who would give you 10 credits if you give him any photos.

Dialogue Changes#

Shaddy Safadi, the seventh entrant on day 7, had his dialogue changed slightly.

I give you 5 credits to let me through.
