LED Storm (Arcade)

This article has a talk page!

This page details one or more prototype versions of LED Storm (Arcade).

To do:
This is just a rough start. I need all the help possible to expand this page:

  • Rip the "FINISH" sprite when you reach the goal in a stage, which is different from the "CHECKPOINT" and "GOAL" sprites of the other versions.
  • Rip all the possible different sprites (such stages had different colors).
  • Rip the soundtrack which is different compared to the location test and final versions.

After finding the location test version of the game and dumped it in MAME, a third version was found and also dumped in MAME. This version is actually an early prototype missing many things that were later inserted in the later versions. In MAME nomenclature, this version is labeled US Prototype 12.

General Differences#

Title Screen#

Prototype

Location Test

Final (US)

Final (Japan)

Final (International)

  • The title screen in the prototype is basically the same as the one seen in the location text, except that there's a 12 in TM's place (which is why MAME labeled it Prototype 12) and the Capcom's copyright is very simplistic.

Controls#

  • The prototype version uses a 3-buttons scheme: Button 1 is used for shooting bullets, Button 2 is used to perform a wheelie and speed up and Button 3 is used to transform your car into a bike.
    • While the location test version uses a 2-buttons scheme: Button 1 is used to perform a small hop and Button 2 is used to transform your car into a bike.
    • Finally, the final version simply uses Button 1 to perform a long jump.
  • To reach the maxinum speed, you have to hold both Up and Button 2 buttons in the prototype, while in the other versions you have only to hold the Up button to compensate the button scheme change.

Gameplay#

MadGearRivalTransform.gif

  • Despite the rival is seen in the game introducion, he's completely nonexistent in the prototype during gameplay. The location test and final version correct this issue to give at the game's story a sense.

Prototype

Location Test/Final

  • The map was recolored to look more refined in the location test and final versions.
  • The only instance where the map is shown in the prototype is during the introduction.
    • In the location test the map is shown during the introduction, after getting a game over (using a grayish background) and when you complete a level (using a black background).
    • In the final the map is shown after getting a game over (using a grayish background) and when you complete a level (using a black background).

Prototype

Location Test

Final

  • While it's presented as a Top 5 list like the location test, the prototype shows the results in the same road strip seen in the other versions in the ending.

  • Same for the message that you'll get from MC after the results. The prototype also shows your car that is positioned differently depending how you beat the stage.
  • Also the 30,000 bonus points obtainable if you get through the entire stage without exploding or falling down a pit is completely absent in the prototype.

The infamous dramatic Game Over jingle is completely nonexistent in the prototype, but the "I'm sorry to say, but we run out of energy!" said by MC is present.

Same for the Result jingle, but this is because in the prototype the map is not shown after a game over and you're directly sent to the continue screen instead.

  • The prototype has only four levels compared to the location test and final game's nine.
  • Also, Big Cave Tunnel reuses Capital theme in the prototype.

  • After completing the fourth level, the game will end with a message saying "GAME OVER (with an unusual large space between the two words) TO BE CONTINUED." and then you'll be sent to the ranking screen. This screen is later reused (and slightly modified) in the location test for the special message when you complete the fifth level. Here's a comparison between them:
