This is a sub-page of Proto:Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (Genesis).
A late prototype of Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. Once exclusively known about through a video on David Javelosa's youtube channel, this prototype was eventually shared by CartridgeCulture on September 18, 2026. This prototype has quite a few differences compared to final game and has more similarities to Puyo Puyo than the final.

Music Differences#
Name |
Proto |
Final |
Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
Title Screen |
The music on the title screen is completely different from the final version! It's a remix of Kraftwerk's "Home Computer," which, due to licensing issues, ended up being replaced by another song in the final version. |
||
Configuration |
Lead instrument is slightly different and a less intense vibrato envelope is used in the mid-section. |
||
Exercise Mode (Sticker of Puyo Puyo) |
Instrument near the end of the song is different, more resembling the original Puyo Puyo instrument. |
||
Danger |
Used for the Game Over screen in this build. Plays at a slower tempo and features slightly different instrumentation. |
||
Stage 1-4 Intro |
Backing melody uses a different instrument (the same as the lead). PSG uses a short pulse instrument instead of a more consistent tone. |
||
Stage 1-4 |
Lacks the bug in the final game where one of the echo channels drops out and the retriggers midway through the note near the end of the song. More closely resembles the stage 5-8 theme. |
||
Stage 5-8 Intro |
The instrument is slightly different from the final version, in addition to having differences in percussion samples. |
||
Stage 9-12 Intro |
Lead plays at a higher octave. Chords are not staggered and one channel is pitched higher. PSG uses a short pulse instrument instead of a more consistent tone. |
||
Stage 9-12 |
Quite a bit different. Bass uses a different instrument and lacks an echo channel. Lead uses two channels as a way to layer itself, as opposed to one with a same-channel echo effect. Ending portion has a less pronounced echo effect. Also used for the Password screen in this build instead of the Memories of Puyo Puyo arrangement. |
||
Stage 13 |
Lead plays at a higher octave and uses a different instrument. Overall more closely resembles the unused alternate version. |
||
Role Call |
Lead instrument in the end portion is different. Lead plays slightly shorter notes in the first/third section. |
||
