This is a sub-page of Proto:Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back.

This prototype is documented on Hidden Palace.

The September 14th, 1997 prototype of Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back is an European review version of the game dated a few weeks before the final North American release version. It is the last pre-release build distributed by SCEE, consisting of both a black-label disc marked "V3" and the red "Review Version" disc. The latter was part of newer cover designs introduced by SCEE in late 1997 for press builds at the time. It was released on 2013.

General Differences#

This build is essentially identical to its American counterpart dated a day earlier, with the only major exception of being an European prototype, so language options are selectable. It does contain a few unique differences, such as:

  • Localization is partially implemented, as all in-game text is still in English only.
  • Selecting "No" to an overwrite prompt will remove some options from the screen. They are still selectable, however.
  • Attempting to exit Hang Eight before or during the warp spawn will freeze the game.
  • Due to an excess of polygons, Piston It Away crashes in the death route area with the clear gem. Areas around the gem are also prone to crashes. This can be prevented with a GameShark code.

Debug Mode#

To enable debugging features, you can turn on debug mode with the following GameShark code:

Save Information#

The information stored on a memory card when saving the game differs in this version compared to the final European release.
