This page details pre-release information and/or media for The Smurfs' Nightmare.

A few screenshots from an early version of the Game Boy Color release were given to some magazines. The English box also featured a couple of these early screenshots.

Notably, despite the game being largely the same as the Game Boy release, the HUD has some changes, which would later be reverted. In these images, the HUD reuses the same head sprite as the one used for The Smurfs Travel the World, and features a large orb (not found in the final). The color remains the same through all the levels, whereas in the final it borrows from the level palette. The breath 'orbs' are also present on every level. As the HUD remains the same across all screenshots, it's possible that this was a mockup, which would explain the classic Game Boy palette.

The early screenshots also show a version of the game where enemies and objects do not exist, or were disabled whilst taking screenshots. There are also some palette changes.

Pre-release

Final

Hefty was a lighter blue in the prototype, and this sprite had some minor shading alterations. The rabbit was another shade of blue, and the grass was green.

Pre-release

Final

There are no floating bubbles. It's also not possible to center the screen in such a way in the final.

Pre-release

Final

The mole had grey shading, to separate himself from Hefty. Like the rabbit, the lighter shade was removed, giving him a blue tint.
