The Sims 4 started out as a completely different Sims game intended to be the successor to The Sims Online back in 2008, then codenamed Sims Olympus. Such idea ended up being scrapped later on, whereas it was decided to be remade into a mainline title.
Reception was heavily divisive before and upon launch. Though it was praised for its refreshed gameplay and advanced house-building, it was criticized for the lack of features that were present in The Sims 2 and The Sims 3 base games and the downgrade of furniture/clothing customization. The general viewpoint continues to stand in terms of the DLC that was released for the game.
