In the game's Operations Guide from the Wii Shop, the stage select image is a pre-final version with several interesting differences:
- The box where the Robot Masters' icons are located is much more square than the final version.
- The Concrete Man icon appears to be slightly smaller, as well as having a larger chin.
- The Jewel Man icon appears to be a little smaller, which makes the diamond on his head much more visible. In addition, his ear is much more rounded, his tongue is not visible, and the shading of the diamonds on his body is different.
- The Hornet Man icon appears to be looking to the side instead of straight ahead at the screen.
- The Tornado Man icon appears to have much softer shading on the face. His helmet is not as round and his eyes aren’t as wide.
- The Plug Man icon is extremely different. He has a purple head, screws for ears, a large screw on top of his head, a much more rounded face, and the two metal bars that make him look like a plug are not visible. This design is also present in some of the concept art seen in Mega Man Legacy Collection 2, and suggests Plug Man’s design was the last to be finalized.
- The Galaxy Man icon appears to have much thinner antennae, as well as a slightly larger visor and a slightly less rounded head, in addition to having slightly different shading.
- The Magma Man icon is quite different, with very different shading, as well as much smaller but more pointy eyes, in addition to the black part of his head being much larger, plus the orange part of his head isn't as visible.
- Splash Woman appears to have much lighter eyes, as well as a black mouth instead of pink. The orange jewel on her head is much more yellowish and much straighter, in addition to part of her head also being much straighter.
E3 2008#
Watch on YouTubeAt E3 2008, a trial version of Mega Man 9 was shown with only the Concrete Man and Plug Man stages to play, although it doesn't appear to have many differences from the final version.
- The stage select uses the "Dr. L" icon instead of showing the bosses, possibly to avoid revealing them. This icon is not used in the final version of the stage select, instead being exclusively used near the boss doors of the Robot Masters' stages.
- The stage select does not have a shop to purchase items.
- The Robot Masters' names do not appear in the boss introduction.
