Famicom Commercial#

Watch on YouTubeA Japanese Famicom commercial from 1983 contains footage of an early version of Mario Bros. at the 18-second mark.

  • The HUD is completely white, as in the other Famicom ports shown off in the commercial.
  • The walking sounds are slightly different and more repetitive than the final ones, sounding closer to the ones from the arcade game.
  • The layout of the platforms are slightly different; the bottom-most platforms are both 8 pixels shorter, the middle left and right platforms are 8 pixels wider, and the center platform is 16 pixels shorter. The width of the bottom-most platforms in the footage match the arcade version, but the others strangely do not.
  • The bricks at the bottom of the screen are 8 pixels taller.
  • The pipes are more basic and blocky in appearance, with the topmost one being positioned a bit higher.
  • The Phase counter on the bottom-left is missing in the footage.
