An early front-facing sprite is used as the menu cursor for the Boot-Up Debug Menu in EarthBound, also developed by HAL (Kirby Bowl would be released just a month after Mother 2 in Japan).
Kirby's eye and head shine were removed, the latter being done in order to keep the sprite symmetrical and save on graphic space (with it still being present on a bunch of asymmetrical frames), the lines separating his arms from his body had two black pixels replaced with dark pink ones, and he was made slightly rounder.
