This page details pre-release information and/or media for H2Overdrive.
H2Overdrive had some changes to mainly graphics and levels for a short period of time before it retained its current look, some of which can be seen in the game's attract screen videos.
- Noticeable differences included a more colorful HUD and a different font.
- Boost gems were later changed to have shattering particles as you collect them.
- Red gems gave you +9.0 boosts instead of +6.0, and blue gave +4 instead of +3.
- A different type of rocket graphic is shown on the boost gems.
- Any time you would hull a boat, the heads-up interface would briefly black out.
- Different voices could be heard when hulling other boats, including the Wilhelm scream.
- Your time between sections in levels is displayed in the corner instead of next to the current time.
- Ramps appear to give you more air time.
- Hull Crusher appeared to be gotten another way, shown by the meter on the bottom.
- The sounds for collecting a boost and a super boost were swapped, with the internal names of the sounds being retained in the final release (i.e. the boost sound was still named superboost).

In terms of level changes, the second ramp in Wild America was moved forward, along with the beginning gems changing. Also, the goal post model in London Underground is smaller in the prototype.
In addition, you could start playing with level 1 boats instead of level 5 boats, and the boats' more robust models were used in lower levels until simpler models were made.
The red X indicator is carried over from the original Hydro Thunder, except without a green fade on the bottom.
