Fortnite begins it's development as an offshoot of mid-2011 internal game jams at EPIC Games. By late December of 2011, they have a workable prototype of the game and announce it at the 2011 Spike Video Game Awards with a short teaser trailer. Development eventually switches from Unreal Engine 3 to Unreal Engine 4 by mid 2012.

At SDCC 2012, Fortnite gameplay was first revealed to the public outside of the teaser trailer with a full panel revealing the game. The game is now running on Unreal Engine 4 with a brighter art design, but still focused on survival gameplay. However, the public was prohibited from recording video or taking photos of this panel. (Though media has gotten out anyways). Alongside this panel, several promotional renders were released by EPIC Games to show the game running on the new engine.

Several video gaming news outlets were also invited to the panel, however it appears several of these outlets didn't get the memo that media was prohibited.
