Development Timeline#

2000s#

  • 2003 - The first planning documents for Final Fantasy Versus XIII, the previous incarnation of Final Fantasy VX, are created during the development of Kingdom Hearts 2.
  • May 8th, 2006 - During E3 2006, Square Enix reveals FABULA NOVA CRYSTALLIS - FINAL FANTASY XIII, a trio of games being concurrently developed by different developers. Each of these games, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, and Final Fantasy Agito XII, all take place in different worlds that share the same common mythos. They also reveal that the game was being headed by Tetsuya Nomura, long-time Final Fantasy series collaborator and creator of the Kingdom Hearts series.

2010s#

  • September 17th, 2010 - A 30 second trailer for Final Fantasy Versus XIII leaked online.

Pre-XV Overview#

Final Fantasy XV began life in 2006 as Final Fantasy Versus XIII, intended to be part of a subseries of games known as Fabula Nova Crystallis - Final Fantasy XIII alongside the headlining Final Fantasy XIII and the mobile phone game Final Fantasy Agito XIII. The titles in Fabula Nova Crystallis would have shared themes and certain lore concepts, but be their own separate universes otherwise. XIII ended up releasing in 2009. Agito XIII, which was developed by staff from the mobile phone game Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII, moved to the PSP around 2008 and would later be renamed Final Fantasy Type-0, in turn causing the subseries to drop the XIII from its title when it released in 2011.

Versus XIII, a PS3-exclusive, had a tumultuous and unfocused development. Initially directed by Tetsuya Nomura, the game was conceived as darker in tone than XIII. Nomura claimed development on the story, character designs, and outfits was complete around 20101, but aside from the occasional trailer, the game was MIA; being absent from events like Tokyo Game Show and E3 for many years, with rumors of its cancellation floating around.

In 2013, the game was effectively reborn as Final Fantasy XV. Hajime Tabata was the game's new director, with Nomura staying as co-director for a short time before leaving to work on other projects. According to Tabata, Versus XIII was roughly 20-25% complete before it became XV, also stating that the game's character designs and visuals had not been fixed up to that point, still being updated and revised up until the switchover.2 Some major parts of the Versus XIII story were later removed, including a female character named Stella - previously shown in the game's trailers - who would have been a "female counterpart" to Noctis.3 XV remained a part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis series, although its connections to it are somewhat subdued compared to XIII and Type-0.

The blood moon is present in the demo Episode Duscae, but it is out of limits of Duscae, more precisely in Lestallum. This does not occur in the final version and it is still not possible to know where this would fit into the story.
