This page details pre-release information and/or media for Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Battle 22.

Electronic Gaming Monthly - Issue 72#

Despite this issue being from July 1995 (the same month as the game released in Japan) and being from a western magazine, these are the earliest known screenshots of the game. Listed at "International Outlook", if you're wondering why it's being advertised before Dragon Ball Z started being dubbed in America, this is for people interested in imports, so much so that it refers to Ultimate Battle 22 as a sequel to the Super Famicom Dragon Ball Z: Super Butouden games.

  • There are 14 characters, but the preview assures there will be 22.
  • The Character Select Ccreen character sprites are the same as the in-game stances, rather than being unique ones for it.
  • The HUD (Heads Up Display) is completely different, opting for a pre-rendered 3D model, rather than a manually drawn one.
  • Stage backgrounds are textured, instead of using a gradient.

Soundtrack screenshots#

In July 21st 1995 (a week before the game released in Japan), a standalone soundtrack for the game releases, featuring arrangements of the game's soundtracks, but the soundtrack's case and booklet features early screenshots of the game, presumably from a build one week away from release.

  • "SUPER GOKOU" is referred to as "SON GOKOU", in the final game, the name SON GOKOU is instead used by Kid Goku.
  • The HUD (Heads Up Display) is different, but closer to the final's design by now. Rather than having separate frames for each bar like in the final game, they are all part of the same frame. The "LIFE" and "POW" text is also perfectly lined up, unlike the final game's wavey look.
  • A beta stage is featured inside the booklet. Likely an early version of Android 16's featuring steeper hills, and a black background.
