This page details pre-release information and/or media for Cool Spot (SNES).

The SNES Cool Spot was once a very different game.

EGM Issue 35 (June 1992)#

Apparently, Cool Spot was originally a sequel to Spot: The Video Game titled Spot II, keeping the board game-style gameplay but with a level-based game structure and between-level cutscenes. Virtually everything seen or mentioned here would change for the final game: the game's genre was obviously changed to that of a platformer, and the graphics for Spot, the 7 Up bottle, and the crabs were redrawn. The screenshots aren't quite clear enough to tell if the beach tileset or background are different from the final. The surfing scene would be used on the final game's intro screen, but the final game doesn't feature any cutscenes apart from the ending. The sandcastle seen here isn't even in the final game at all.

A remnant of the early "Spot II" title can be found in the final game's unused memory chart screen, which refers to the game as "Spot 2 ... Cool Spot".

Also interesting to note is the fact that the only platform listed is the SNES. Not only would the Genesis version of Cool Spot end up releasing first, but all other ports of the game appear to be directly based on the Genesis version, implying it was the first version to be developed, so it's unclear why it wouldn't have been mentioned here.
