This page details pre-release information and/or media for Chicken Invaders.
Chicken Invaders began as an unfinished and unreleased prototype made for DOS in 1997, coded with Borland C++ 3.1. It has since been lost just like most of the games made by its developer around that time, and only the title screen remains. Some of its code is still present in the game engine used by the Chicken Invaders series to this day.
There was another version coded in Java instead which was even more incomplete. It was given up on quickly due to it not being powerful enough for decent animation at the time.
Differences#
- Everything looked different and most assets used a pixel art style instead of being 3D renders.
- Chickens were much smaller and had larger beaks. They also only had three frames of animation (wings up, side, down).
- The player controlled a handgun instead of a spaceship, and it fired actual bullets.
- The game only consisted of around 2-3 normal levels and one boss level. The Java version only had a single level.
- Food dropped by Chickens was not collectible.
- Asteroids, powerups and missiles were not implemented yet.
- There were few sound effects and no music.
- The logo was slightly different.
- The game's resolution was 320×200 instead of 640×480.
Trivia#
- The starfield used in this game was taken from Radar Wars Arcade, another game by the same developer, just flipped upside-down and with a different palette.
