Unused Localization Features#
The Japanese and German versions use two diacritical modifiers that display on top of specific characters to convey different letters. These two modifiers are loaded separately from the font to account for situations like the diacritics overlapping the top of message boxes. The Japanese version uses them for the dakuten and handakuten variants, such as はばぱ, whereas the German version uses both of them for the umlaut at varying heights, such as OÖö.
There were some attempts to add this feature in the French version so that the game can display accented uppercase characters. There's unused diacritic modifiers for the acute accent and grave accent in the French version. The final French script avoids accents for the all-caps text for consistency. It did accidentally include the character É in "NAUFRAGÉ" that would have called these diacritics but shows as E ingame because the French version code was intentionally modified to disable this feature, albeit some fan patches successfully restored its functionality. As a result, the game only supports lower-case accentuated characters, and versions of the upper-case Ç and Ô that all fit on a single 8x8 tile. It's likely that this was done because full support of diacritical accents would have required extending the existing code to support up to 4 different French accents.
Incidentally, while the English version never makes use of this feature, its font is based on an earlier version of the German font and diacritics, but without the ligatures requested by the German and French translators in order to better fit in more text in a smaller number of tiles.
